From Peter King of Sports Illustrated:

"I want to say this with all due respect, because
I'm an animal lover. But I wish there would be as
much hand-wringing over the 3,376 American fatalities
in Iraq than there is over the death of Barbaro."

I wish there was as much hand-wringing over the 45-50k American fatalities in Vietnam, the 400k+ in WWII and 100k+ in WWI than there is over the death toll in Iraq.

Oh wait... the media wasn't crawling up everyone's ass at the front lines with a video camera back then, streaming their broadcasts live via satellite. Families found out about the loss of loved ones via proper channels, not on the after-dinner newscast.

Fear and panic always get ratings and rating are all that matter, regardless of the content.

While I can understand your quoter's point, sometimes people just need a spot of hope to shine through the darkness war to keep themselves sane.

If hearing about the record-bound triumphs, unanticipated disastrous injury, roller-coaster recovery efforts and eventual unfortunate put-down of a champion racehorse (the likes of which hasn't been seen in decades) can take their minds off the doom and gloom of war for a short time, so be it.
