Well jeez louise - Jesse McCartney out (of the movie, not the closet) and Dev Patel in to play Zuko the Fire Nation prince.I want to be happy and sit back and celebrate a little. No, really I WANT to. It's generally not in my nature to have such constant and consistent outrage. I wanna be like "Oh wow, a (very bizarre sort of) concession; nothing ( Read more... )

Ugh, they're totally going to play this as their get out of jail free card with all future accusations of racism.

And, as others have pointed out, way to have the only coloured actor play an (initially) bad guy. Fail.

For real, man. The only way they can make this better is for Rathbone to ALSO have a 'scheduling conflict'. Call it whatever you want it, Paramount; I'm not gonna shut up about this!

Oh, absolutely. Rathbone's gotta go. Although I'm getting really curious about this Ringer kid. They haven't released any photos of him, have they?

No photos as of yet. I think they'd have been posted to AAW by now.

Wait what? Patel as Zuko?
How does that even make sense?
He seems much more like a Sokka to me.
I'll take what I can get but man, that is SUCH a random casting choice!

Isn't it bizarre? I mean, not really bizarre when we think purely in terms of MONEY MONEY WHO'LL MAKE PARAMOUNT MORE MONEY...but in every other respect? Completely WTF. Ohhhh man, those sneaky Hollywood types, think they can pull a fast one on us!

AHAHAHAHAH YES. Yay for Micah! XD XD

Man, srsly, the avarice behind this casting choice is making me sick. I almost feel sorry for Jesse for being so clearly lame that even marketing could see they made a mistake.

....wait no. I don't feel bad at all. AHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHH FAIL.

So, apparently they've cast Suki as a POC, although I know nothing of Jessica Jade Andres, according to that same Variety article. Will there be a Toph in this film at all? I'm a little o.O that they're talking about Suki and not Toph. :(

ETA: ah, nevermind about Toph, she comes in later.

I'm still headdesking, however. Because, does this mean the entire Fire Nation, you know the conquering, pillaging, cultural imperialists will all be brown now?

Slumdog Millionaire was my favorite movie of 2008 by a large margin. You're totally right about the plot being transcendent -- And yeah, it's a bunch of standard movie fare, but it was all done so well. It's just a fantastic film, period.

I think you're right about the Avatar changes, too -- The studio is handling this so poorly. Backing down now would be a bad idea, when they're clearly hearing the fannish outrage but trying to do things halfway and on the sly.

It's totally done well! I love how they handled the flashback scenes and it gave me a crazy-happy thrill whenever it went all artsy with the film style because YAY. Popular film that's both stylistically edgy/unconventional AND uses an all-Indian cast AND a pile of amazing child actors?? It's a triple-whammy of Hollywood Wake-Up pills. XD

Also, I so wanted to steal lil!Latika away and keep her all for myself. *hee*

Thank you so much for the support, and you're so right man. Halfway and on the sly is exactly how they're doing it and that just isn't acceptable.
