FANART MUSING
It's interesting to see the sign-ups at yuletart as well as the questions us Mods get from participants and potential participants. Questions that are unique to a fanart fest, I think. Like ( Read more... )

Here via metafandom as well.

I found it interesting to see this come up given the comment thread I had with you, I believe, in January when I talked about wanting to participate.

(Which means I have to ask: That all still applies, correct? So long as I hand paint everything but the pose?)

Dude, your worry is starting to make me worried. I remember our thread in January and I can't recall - Do you have any online examples of your art (ie, the style/process you plan to do for Yuletart) that you can link me to? Because now that you're commenting again, I'm started to get concerned; and the last thing I wanna do is jerk you around only to say 'we can't accept this' at the end of all your hard work. :/

I linked to other people's examples in January, but I've actually never done it myself, this would be my first.

I'm assuming then, that what I said then still stands now. I'm not sure what else I'm supposed to say to reassure you of the decision. :(

Ok, stupid questions out of the sake of curiosity... alchemia September 21 2009, 09:47:26 UTC
What are "graphics"? At first I thought that was just digital art, but you list computer art as ok...? Whats the difference?

What is a "collages/paintovers"? Is this a sort of more-complicated photo-manipping, or are you talking about physically cutting out images/photos to apply to canvas and paint on...?

Not stupid at all! These definitions in and of themselves are murky. XD

'Graphics' are defined (for the purpose of yuletart as things like icons and banners and in a wider sense, photomanips.

'Collage/paintovers' is much more murky, uh. The best definition I can give you is this art we accepted from last year. In the case of this fandom/subject matter, the collage/paintover technique worked. I think this has a lot to do with the fact that there are no actual human faces/bodies depicted (and therefore no photos of a celebrity's head placed on another photo of a body), and since the fandom itself is fantastical, it works.

It so much all on a case-by-case basis, with the art guidelines being jsut that - guidelines.

This is a lovely post and I'll have more to say in a bit but my first thought is WAIT, YOU ACCEPT CRAFTS?!?

EDIT: OKAY I AM BACK. I do think there's a certain amount of this in 'word' fests and fandoms-- there's often a minimum word count for things like Remix and Yuletide, which eliminates drabbles by definition. When I was modding a drabble community we had to make the judgement call if series of drabbles were acceptable (the answer: yes, but only if each drabble stood alone).

I think part of the challenge is that, to a certain degree, all fanwork is 'art,' but not all art is visual art, and you want to be very careful to keep things reasonably consistent.

off to check the yuletart guidelines now omg.

Oh heck yeah!! We got a lot of awesome crafts over the past couple years, it's been wonderful and so cool!!

Oooh, that's a good point about the drabble series, and I totally like the decision you guys came to! Makes a lot of good sense. :D

It's interesting to see the different challenges that show up.

I think it's because there's still this huge division between "art" (by which people usually mean any sort of visual media) and writing. People have done some experimental stuff with writing but it's not as accepted and in the popular consciousness as much. Plus it's a lot easier to get your book or epic poems or what have you published rather than get your art into the museum, so there hasn't been as much debate as what truly counts as writing. Art has a higher barrier so people have tried to break down that barrier so now there's not a formal definition as such.

...or I may be rambling because I'm procrastinating on my paper. =)
