i had moderate success teaching myself japanese with CDs (i used pimsleur's audio course, taken out of the library), but got frustrated 'cause i couldn't also read what i was hearing, and thusly wasn't always sure what they were saying. it may work better for you, and it is free. brooklyn public gives you access to mango languages, which gives voice, translation, and written (hiragana, in the case of japanese); this may work better for you, but you'll be stuck in front of a computer while doing it. still free, tho.
