Torchwood. Yes. That always makes me feel better.
I'm amused by that fact that despite this episode being a beautiful story about grief, loss and how the road to hell is paved with good intentions, it will always be remembered as the 'The one with the hothouse handjob'.
So, a Gwen episode. A really good Gwen episode. I know!
And this was how like Gwen. yes, she blundered into situations like an elephant in a blindfold and made things approximately a trillion times worse but...you could see why she did it. And Jack didn't help. Does he not remember when she was hired? That she just would not go away? Tenacious is that girl's middle name and of course, having been told to leave it,she was going to keep going. Hell, she might still be investigating now if Ianto hadn't slipped her that GPS.
Ah, Ianto I love you an inappropriate amount. You tried reasoning with Jack...and when that didn't work you went behind his back and distracted him with sex. Kudos. Thats the smart, devious boy I like to see. Still not entirely sure why he did it - Did he disagree with Jack on the idea of the institution or was he simply speeding along the inevitable and helping Gwen?
Eh, who cares? There was topless hothouse sex. And naked hide and seek (Ianto's "He cheats, he always cheats" may be my favourite line delivery of the series for the fondness and the intimacy, as well as for the imagery). Thanks, BBC.
And Ruth Jones, have to mention her because she was heartbreaking (and its a mark of how good an actress she is that when my dad called for out post-TW discussion he simply couldn't believe that she was Nessa from Gavin and Stacey.
Wow. Was this one good or what?
I like that Jack was basically a complete loser whilst he was wondering how to meet up with the Doctor again: That the vintage, sadistic lesbians (How awesome were they btw?)employed him as a useful tool for all those years and that he didn't take a lead role at TW until the year 2000 (Hurray for continuity by the way with the locket from The twilight streets - what I wouldn't give for that locket to turn up in season 3).
Poor Tosh, she just can't catch a break. I love that she is canonically absolutely bloody brilliant but not that she essentially had no choice - TW or solitary confinement? Hmmm, thats a tough one.
I thought that Owen's story was a little weak - i've been impressed so far this season by how they've rehabilitated the character, but this felt like a bridge too far - he was a bit like a pod person, nothing remotely like our Owen. The scariest thing this episode has to be that precariously hanging sheet of glass - take note, PJ Hammong, THAT is how you do scary!
And Ianto. Ah, yes. I love that his story gave us answers...but oh so many more questions. It was clearly intended as light relief (as a rom-com with a pterodactyl if you believe TW declassified)but as always with Ianto it was a little unsettling. Because it makes us realise that the deception didn't end with 'Cyberwoman' - Ianto is still hiding, still playing a role - the one that got him the job. How much have we seen of the real Ianto, if any?
Thats not to say he's unsympathetic though - because you can sense the desperation behind the deviousness, the willingness to offer up anything - including himself - in order to save Lisa.
And when he finally gets that job offer its after that moment of sparking, potent sexual attraction - Is that why Jack employed him? Did Ianto end up carrying out the promises of those sexually-loaded initial encounters? And did he enjoy them despite himself? I'm sure more than ever now that there was something going on pre-Cyberwoman, which goes some way to explaining Jack's OTT reaction.
Especially when you consider its a trick that Ianto's still employing - a la the distraction sex in 'Adrift'.
And here's where I get grumpy because - confession time - I think John Hart is rubbish. and dull. and I wish that the season finale was based around a more serious and exciting threat than Jack's jilted ex.
I may also be grumpy due to the spoilers i've read which tells me that i'm going to be very, very unahppy with the events of the finale. And we still haven't told if the show has been renewed in any format. Aargh.
