I think the fault lies with American grammar, which is just not English. One learns to cope. Just about.
Have you read any Fifty Shades? I had the Inner Goddess quote cherrypicked for me by a friend, and after that I just couldn't contemplate even opening the thing. On the one hand, I love that a woman writing about sexual pleasure has been pounced upon by an enormous audience of other women unused to reading about sexual pleasure, be damned what the critics have to say. On the other, why why this book? Ah, it pains me, my precious.

I flipped through one, but it was even worse written than Dan Brown, so I could not endure it. When one is correcting every other sentence for both grammar and style, it is not possible to read for pleasure of any sort. In this case I fully agree with the critics. They are not even suitable to give away to people learning English as a second language.
My self-insert in my fics is a version of Baba Yaga. I'm not sure if that counts as an inner goddess.
