Good children's hospitals, and the people who work there and make them good, are one of the blessings I never considered until I needed them. My children aren't severely or chronically ill, but my son has had one round in the NICU when he got pneumonia as a newborn, and several return trips to the emergency department since. Both DC's and Seattle's Childrens Hospitals have given him amazing care and me as much reassurance as was possible under the circumstances. I'm very grateful, and glad to know I live near a good one still, because I may need it again.
It's been very, very emotional to work at and near this hospital, and on the new campus, my new office is again right next door to Children's, so it will continue.
When I walked through the building, on my way to the cafeteria or the Pediatrics administration offices, it could be overwhelming. Walking past kids in their wagons, IVs attached, etc...knowing just how sick/hurt they must be to need to be at Children's...but at the same time, knowing that they are getting the best possible care, and being thankful for that availability.
And, oh, when the helicopter flies in....knowing that there is a child in that helicopter that is so sick or so hurt that they needed to come by helicopter...wondering what's going on in their parents' heads....
Yes, I am very, very grateful to have healthy, happy children.
