I write original fiction, not fan, but personally, I would be tickled pink if someone wanted to quote my work in a paper. Permission is never required for this sort of thing (if it's on the internet and anyone can see it, it's fair game), but I'd bet that most of the authors would love to know that they're being written about in an academic context, and might even want a copy of the paper when it's done.

All stories/works are copyrighted even if not registered, though technically fanfiction is a breach of copyright on it's own d:

That that said, I would be giddy if someone used my stuff, and would want to know about it for the fuzzy feelings. XD ESPECIALLY if it gets published in a real book.
... though if you're quoting as an example of "wow, this person sucks" you might not want to contact them ^_-
All excellent points. I thank you. Yeah, I probably will end up contacting them, especially since Cecilia wants to publish our essays. I'm not going to use any "bad" examples, just because those are not interesting, and there are plenty of examples around. I want to put a more positive light on ff. Thanks for your thoughts!!
I think I'd like to be asked. I don't think I'd really care--and probably technically speaking you're okay because it's an educational citation--but I just think it's general Internet politeness. I don't know, I guess you run the risk of people saying no? You can never predict how crazy the people on ff.net might be...
Yeah, ff.net is sometimes scary. I think I'll end up telling them that I plan to use excerpts of their stories, but naturally I will cite them correctly and credit them, etc etc.
