Type your cut contents here.I've been listening to a lot of Talk Radio (specifically CFRB 1010) lately. I don't know why.
Usually the rules of debate are completely ignored, and these people's sense of justice and morals is so flakey that they cannot hold a position for more than 1 argument.
The topic I heard today was on the Carleton University ( Read more... )

Abortion as a contraceptive... *shudder* Judging by what I've heard from friends who have had abortions, the process involved should ensure that that form of contraception won't be lasting more than once per person.

1. While I may have gone to the extreme in my depiction of the Leftist societies, I've realised that there can be no resolution between being a social leftist and an economic leftist. It's easy to talk about there being free-choice in society when a ficticious slush-fund is set up to pay for it all ( ... )

you've almost been successful in grouping me with right-wing pro-lifers. it can never hold because ultimately i do want social freedom in society.I think this is an extension of the societal influence the US plays on our society. There, in the land of the two-party system, it's extremely easy for people to fall into the polarizing politics of the either/or position. Either you're in favour of abortion-on-demand, or you're a misogynistic "right-to-lifer" who thinks that abortion should be outlawed. It saddens me to see arguments play out like this, because this (absolutist, binary thinking) is the opposite of true debate ( ... )

I'm going to go one step further.
This idea of duality stems from the Christio-Judaic influence that permeates Western philosophy in any dicipline.
The concepts of black and white, right and wrong, and good and evil are inherent in their conception of the world.
Most people, who read, think, and act critically have long recognised that there is very rarely black and white, almost never do right and wrong exist, and that there is no such thing as good and evil.

i'm not going to address the CFRB/abortion thing. if i was any less tired, i would. but i'm too sleepy.

i'm currently picturing you dating a girl with hair shorter than yours, thus, a bald girl. that would be amazing.

also, this:
10. What do you do when no one is watching?
make sandwiches in the nude.

is brilliant.

I think it's interesting that you refer to abortions leading to a "lack of responsibility", because most of the women that I've talked to who've contemplated/undergone abortion felt that it was the responsible choice to make; that for whatever reason (financial/emotional/lack of maturity/etc) they didn't feel that they would make a good parent, so they wanted to take steps to prevent becoming one at that time.

I think I've mentioned this to you before, but I believe that the most effective way to prevent abortions is to get rid of the reasons that people have abortions: which means making sure that there's easy access to birth control, strong education regarding safer sex, and a strong social net for young/single/poor mothers. Ensuring those things would prevent a LOT of abortions. But, they wouldn't do anything to advance conservative beliefs, so you don't hear anti-abortion groups promoting them at all.

We're at an interesting point in history - children are maturing faster biologically, but they're maturing more slowly emotionally and mentally. So the situation we're running into is one where people are physically ready to become parents years before they're emotionally ready to become parents.

I'm not sure I know what the answer to "the abortion question" is, but I know that open, honest debate about it can only be a good thing, and I want to thank you for opening your LJ up to some sober, polite debate about it.
