[comics] Poll time / canon-consistency in fic (DCU)

Jun 07, 2007 11:51

The context for this post - besides, of course, my usual overweening neuroses - is that I'm currently writing a fic set about a year/18 months *after* the 52/missing year. I'm also reading, usually through unhappy eyes, current canon ( Read more... )

But current canon is diverging *so much* from the stories that I want to tell that I feel like, given another couple months, I'll be writing original fic.

*waves the AU flag*

Honestly, in Comics, what *is* 'canon-consistent'? There's so much, and each title, even each issue, contradicts both past canon and current other titles all the time. Write what makes you happy. You're a good enough writer (way way more than good enough) that you'll make us happy too.

Also, I will sound weird today-- spent all morning getting medical procedures done and tooling around on public transit. So. (This is why I've edited this comment so many times.)

Hee! But there's full-AU, like your Cretan stuff, and divergence-AU, like Te's Green/Gold, and then, well. This is just me moving forward in time without anything changing. All the cracked-out changes are going on *in* canon, for once. Oh, comics. :)

Well, that's the thing, of course. I'm comfortable ignoring Morrison's Batman run, because the incidental details aren't (I think) going to derail what I know of Bruce Wayne. But then there are "facts", like Duela Dent's death recently, which can be harder to ignore...? Thing.

You don't sound weird, don't worry.

well, for values of "reading" meaning "occasionally skimming, and also following along when people talk about stuff". the only title i'm buying is blue beetle....

Overall canon with the wacky monitor wtf-ishness? No. Select titles that work for me? OH YES. Like, I'm genuinely enjoying The Flash and Outsiders. Nightwing is good for me if I can just shifty eye the Monitor stuff (I... DICK :X) Birds of Prey needs to get its gay back, but I loff it too. Green Arrow pleases me even though I'm sort of !!! about the impending possible marriage stuffs.

(This reminds me that I have to sit down and officially trim my pull list)

I tend to not care about fics keeping up with current canon? I mean, that depends on maybe certain situations (maybe?). I think as long as there's a "Oh, this is happening post most recent crisis so Bart's not a teenager anymore so..." Sort of thing so I can know what/where exactly one's playing at?

*holds head* It's so annoying, it hurrrrrrrrts me.

But individual titles, as you say, can be chockfull of neatness.

I think as long as there's a "Oh, this is happening post most recent crisis so Bart's not a teenager anymore so..." Sort of thing
Yeah. Usually, when I *do* diverge from canon, I can leave a note (or put a detail in) that indicates the clear point of divergence. But this fic, man. Argh. I have Dick thinking about the fallout from Sivana outing the Outsiders, so *that* happened, but all the Monitorshit and weird-ass Jason in Countdown? Not so much.

Yeah, that kind of thing used to drive me crazy? But now with comics and wacky not only weird in canon stuff I suffer from the drive to take "x from the movies and y from SV or OH OH OH MARVEL/DC CROSSOVER!" and so yeah. It's not anything *goes*, but it's (Maybe?) just you know, comics, where in canon is sort of what you feel like pasting together this week (Hence the monitor rage!)

(One thing I love about comics fandom? Mostly, we are fairly "Whatever, authorial intent" because we a)know the author/creator is probably on crack rock and not with us anyway and b)the sandbox is 70 years old and so it's sort of besides the point)

But, Bart is love. And I'm unreasonably excited about Green Arrow Year One and Huntress Year One. *UNREASONABLY*

I didn't do the poll because I only got into DC 'verse last year some time and am currently going through the back catalog of Nightwing, The Outsiders, Teen Titans v3, and Robin (if I can ever get my hands on it) before I attempt to tackle 52 and then the OYL lines. I don't know if that counts as current continuity yet. I'm working my way there, though. In a Marvel vein, same with Captain America. I blame Jube, as that one is purely all her fault ( ... )

This certainly helped answer my questions! If you ever need a hand in the back-reading you're doing, give me a shout, yes?

I'd also like to read whatever Roy's title is called; I can never remember.
He used to be in The Titans, then Outsiders; he pops up in Green Arrow; JLA v.4 seems to be his new home.
...that help?

At heart, Dick Grayson and Tim Drake own me and I'll follow any title that covers their lives.

One of the reasons for fanfiction (my personal view here) is to take established characters in a direction the canon does not take them
Definitely. I'm still feeling strange canon aches, after being here for over a year and learning to love contradictions and quantum possibilities, but your comment's reminding me why I *am* here.

Thank you. :D

Eeeee! I shall keep that in mind for when I am actually at my computer with my list of "To Read" comics. Yes, I am *that* kid.

Actually, it does. I've heard good things about the current GA run, so I shall see about laying hands on it if it also includes Roy goodness. I don't know why I thought he had a title called Arsenal.

Your wisdom is exceeded only by your beauty. :DN'awww, shucks. For reals? I am finding myself enamored of Jason as well, the scrapper. Oh, Bats. How you mangle the minds of all young boys you touch. And how, in their own fucked up ways, they aspire for your approval. Granted, that's Dick more than the others, but yeah. I've not gotten to the Steph/Spoiler arcs yet ( ... )

At one point, he did. I don't know if it's any good; you'd want to ask derryderrydown.
