[politicomics] "Righting wrongs and being righteous in your life"

One of the few unmitigatedly good things about yesterday (the 4th) is that it's Steve Rogers's birthday. And I was going to write up my thoughts about just how awesome he is as a character—I know, from the outside, he can seem terribly corny (Ny, I think you once described him & Barry Allen as being "not part of your America"? Oh he IS what we as a country should be. And fail miserably at attaining, but that never stopped him. I think Marvel could have done him so much better than having him go out, for lack of a better term, like a punk. He died doing what he believed, but they treated him so horribly.

Oh, that article made me shiver and smile. There's something about America as an ideal and as an experiment - in the constitutional documents and some of the cases, and in the voices of people like Martin Luther King - which is just. *shivers* The hope of it. I was reading Bentham the other day, his pragmatic contempt for the idea of natural rights and thinking about that phrase "inalienable rights" and how honestly crazy it actually is - how it flies in the face of so much - and, well. That page from the comic book - "We can be anything, Captain America! Girls too!" - sums it up quite neatly for me. ♥

Oh, my, your comment is just beautiful. The U.S. is a weird, sad, fucked-up place, but I'm glad I grew up there (and equally glad that I'm never going back, if I can help it).

I'm not feeling terribly eloquent today, so I'll just add a nod and a "right on!" to everything that has been said in the above comment threads, and that beautiful link.
