Just a little fic...

Just something i wrote a few days ago... Nothing special. Kind of fits a little with the mood of holiday romance...

Title: A dreamed conversation?
Rating: Not that serious. Just sad.
Length: just under 1,000
Disclaimer: Of course this didn't happen. Life's not like that.
Note: I know the first part's confusing as hell. Might need re-reading.

“How have you been?”

“Fine, fine...”

“You look much better.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. You look young again... like before.”

“Hm.”

“Are you happy now?”

“Now? ...Yes. Happier than ever.”

“I’m so glad. The last few times...”

“I know. It was right there, all along.”

“I noticed it. Just a shame you didn’t.”

I know those voices...

“It’s cold out of bed.”

“I noticed you shivering. Why don’t you wear some pyjamas?”

“Because.”

*sigh*

“You know what I’m like.”

“Mm... sadly.”

“Heh.”

“I’ve been watching you.”

“Really? Even when...”

“Not then. The rest of the time.”

“Oh, good.”

“It’s hilarious. I can’t always understand but I never could... Only him...”

...

“You still talk about me a lot though.”

“I can’t help it. He keeps bringing it up.”

“But it’s different to her...”

“Well... You know why.”

“Mm...”

...

“I never asked. Are you happy?”

“Yes. Happier than ever. I see now why. Before... I never realised the point. Not till now.”

“That’s good...”

...

Am I... dreaming?

“The first time... I was more surprised than you.”

“I caused it more likely. I’ve always been like that though... Strange...”

“That’s what he sees in you. Those little glimmers he teases. He’s trying to tease them out.”

“You think?”

“Mm. Definitely.”

...

“You don’t know it... but it’s the same for him.”

“What?”

“The reason. He might not even know it, but it is.”

“Really?”

“Trust me.”

...

If I’m dreaming, and conscious of it... Why can’t I wake up?

“Hm? Can’t you move?”

No, I can’t.

“Appears not... Guess it’s to do with the reflection.”

“Oh...”

“Maybe in the light...”

...

*laughter*

“You’re going faint.”

“I am.”

“Shame about that. Move back.”

“Only if you come too.”

“Alright.”

...

“Is this... indefinite?”

“As long as we both want it.”

“Then yes, it is.”

“Thank you. I’m scared to move on.”

“Well you’ll have two companions when you do.”

...

“You think he’ll...?”

“I will.”

*giggle*

“You don’t have to pretend now.”

“I’m not. That’s what it’s done. I don’t need to anymore. Not in private at least.”

...

“What have you been up to lately?”

“Not now... You know and so do I... There are more important things we can only talk about now.”

“In the bedroom?”

“With you, I mean.”

“You talk about it with him though.”

“Do I?”

“Mm. I’ve never seen you so open and honest. Even with me.”

“It takes a lot... It took all my spiritualistic faith... With both of you.”

Am I... whom they’re talking about?

Who are they though?

I know them... Their voices...

I’m not awake though, my brain isn’t working properly.

What state am I in?

...

“I don’t know what I would have done without you. Between you and them... I...”

“Something kept you going though, didn’t it?”

“Him.”

“Mm. You knew. All along.”

“All along...”

...

I need to work out...

If this is a dream, I have to succumb to it.

If it isn’t, I need to wake up.

But which is it?

“Wow! Look at that moon!”

*laughter*

“That’s exactly the same!”

“What?”

“That’s what you said your first night.”

“Really?”

“Mm. Exactly.”

“Hmm... It always is beautiful when I’m with you though.”

“Well it has to be.”

“Ruin the mood, why don’t ya’...”

...

...

I still don’t know...

I must know...

“You needed this.”

“Tonight? Not particularly, I’m tired.”

“Hey! It’s takes a lot of effort getting here.”

“I’m joking. I never mind you.”

“You call me here after all.”

“Mm.”

“But still... You did need this... Or rather him.”

“Yes. My whole life.”

“I’m so happy for you.”

“I miss you.”

“I miss you too Paul.”

This isn’t a dream.

I shot up, eyes open, brain working.

They noticed, turning to look at me over their shoulders rather than the unobstructed window.

It was the middle of the night.

There was a full moon.

Paul stood there, naked as when we had gone to sleep together. He seemed unashamed, hardly shocked I had suddenly woken up. He had his arm around the shoulder of his fellow conversationalist who stood shorter than he did, head only reaching his chin height.

Someone who suddenly made the whole conversation make sense:

“Sarah...”

She was pale, all in white, features now indiscriminate below her waist. Monochrome, translucent but shining as if created from the moonlight they stood on. The only colours remaining apart from white were bright blue eyes and the same long, golden hair. The strangest part was, it made you sad just to look at her. Nothing to do with her alone, just the act of being a ghost, a spirit, made her that way.

“I should go.” She said, moving her gaze to Paul’s face.

“Oh no... You don’t have to.” He looked at her again, pleading with an inevitable outcome.

“Goodbye... for now.” She glanced out the window quickly before back. “Dear Paul.”

She leaned in for a final kiss, fading into his embrace.

Paul stood there alone for a second, glanced back to the full moon, before drawing the curtains with a sigh.

“Do you want me to explain?” He asked, voice strangled slightly with the melancholic tears that came from his eyes.

...

“Sometimes, when there’s a full moon, I can call her back here. Only for a while but we can talk again... Without her I don’t know if...” Paul wasn’t looking at me, staring instead in the direction Sarah had been standing. He crossed his hands in front of him, feeling foolish standing there naked. “I haven’t seen her since we got together. Tonight just seemed like a good time to.” Paul looked back at me again, smiling. “You must think I’m nuts, don’t you?”

“No Paul. I...” What did I think? I hadn’t believed in ghosts till tonight. I wouldn’t have really called her a ghost though, she was a spirit; exactly the same as she had been in life. “I think you’re incredible.”

He smiled and thanked me, returning to bed.

We held each other protectively, Paul falling asleep quickly.

I couldn’t help thinking back to their conversation though, what they had said about not only me, but also each other.

All those years, Paul had kept living...

All because of me.
