Sounds reasonable to me. The idiotic approach to homework rampant in most public schools these days is a big reason why I'm dreading sending Holden to school next year. I am seriously considering alternatives.

Really? Does the school(s) your considering have different reps at the playground?

I'm considering home schooling, or an alternative curriculum arrangement that would be somewhat similar to the agreement the parents in that article came up with. There are very few good reasons for a child in junior elementary school to have homework.

I don't think that private school at the elementary level is worth the money it would cost. The teacher-student ratio at private school is better, but I don't think the teachers are of a higher calibre than those found in public schools.

Good for them! I have friends who teach and I respect them, but sometimes schools act like they have a right to take up all the kid's free time. Some kids can blaze through the homework, but some kids don't study that fast, so "homework" ends up taking up their whole evening.

We have to move beyond the; "one size fits all" approach when it comes to teaching our kids. The current system screws certain kids, even intelligent and interested kids.

I also think we need to re-think testing, and admit that some perfectly smart kids are just not good at regurgitating facts upon demand. Testing really hurts some kids who don't deserve it.

Interesting point. The problem then seems to be that this sort streaming is discriminatory.
