I'm sure you've heard of this group - the Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas, whose religion revolves around "God hates fags and caused the war in Iraq because there are so many fags and if you're son/daughter is a soldier who dies in Iraq (regardless of his/her sexual orientation), it is God's punishment for all the fags."  Brilliant! So sensible ( Read more... )

Maybe "put in them in their place" is not what I meant. I more appreciated it as quality mockery, which is the only recognition I believe these people deserve ( ... )

The reason it would be most effective from someone who does believe it is a sin-- and I'm not talking the people who believe it's THE SIN THAT'S BRINGING THE WHOLE WORLD TO DAMNATION, I'm talking the otherwise good, kind, sensible people who will, when the issue comes up in conversation, say, "I don't believe in gay marriage, marriage is between a man and a woman"-- usually these people are older, but you'll find younger people who aren't insane who think that, too (usually they've been more sheltered and met less actual gay people)-- anyway, the reason it would be most effective coming from them is that the argument would no longer be about whether or not it's okay to be gay, it would be whether or not it's okay to persecute someone for, not just being gay, but whatever their perceived sin might be. It would bring to light the issue of, let's call it Modern Day Stonings. Well I can't speak for other people. I personally am all for a revision of what constitutes "marriage," because I believe the attitude IS what counts, not the ceremony (which, any rate, is better labeled "a wedding." "Marriage" is day to day living). My sister had, according to most clergypeople, a purely "legal" wedding being married by a district justice, not a properly church-sanctioned union, but I believe it is a proper marriage because of how THEY see it. Likewise Angie had a technically, uh, illegal? wedding-- okay UN-legal-- although oddly enough it was officiated by a religious leader, and again, it's the ATTITUDE that's important. I know some religions, even Christian ones (I believe it's the Quakers?) have a couple marry themselves without an outside officiant. If they're serious about sticking by each other through all the ups and downs of life, as far as I can see it they're properly married ( ... )

This is supposed to be in reply to Liz, coming before the comment that begins with a quote of her on gay marriage. Stupid LJ.
