Summary: Finding out he's in love with Jensen isn't really that hard, actually managing to say the words without fucking it up is the real challenge for Jared.
Word Count: 1,564

If anything, the one thing that changes between him and Jensen when they jump over the line that divides friendship and whatever the fuck this is, is that they stop saying those three little words that used to be so common to them and which they slipped into any conversation without really thinking about it.

Jared's very much aware that there's friendship love, the kind Jensen professed whenever Jared brought him some coffee in the mornings, and then there's love. And whatever it is they're doing, whatever their friendship has morphed into with the pass of years, they're not ready to say it.

Or at least, Jared didn't think he was.

It hits him one day during set, as he's sitting at a side watching Jensen film a scene with Misha that involves a lot of deep staring and low-murmured words. Thing is, Jared doesn't get jealous about these things because he knows it's just acting - hell, if Jensen hasn't yet mentioned anything about Jared's parts with Genevieve, then he doesn't have any right to point it out. During cuts, though, it's a whole different thing; as they arrange Misha's make-up, and as they hear some directions from the crew and revise their marks, Jensen and Misha joke around, hands fall over shoulders and even from the distance Jared can tell there's some definite squeezing of Misha's fingers around Jensen's biceps.

He knows he's being stupid, he knows it. Misha's going home to his wife that night and Jensen's going back to Jared, and no matter what happens today, that isn't going to change. And yet, the knowledge of that doesn't stop his chest from aching in hopes of so much as a glance from Jensen, and Jared can't find a word to describe it that isn't the one that starts with L and ends with letters he doesn't even want to think about.

He has fallen in love with Jensen. Loving someone isn't the same as being in love with someone - or perhaps it is? Jared cared for Jensen when they were friends as much as he does right now, only maybe it was in a different way. Or was it that Jared was too oblivious to notice?

"If you keep frowning so hard, people are gonna think you have a bad case of gases," he hears Genevieve say from his right.

"I do," he shoots back without really thinking, which is enough to make her go away.

It's not a big deal, honestly, being in love with Jensen. Except that now that Jared knows it, he finds the words in the tip of his tongue at all times - every little thing Jensen does for him, even the most stupid and less romantic shit ever, makes Jared struggle against the impulse of saying it.

One night, he actually does say the words after Jensen dozily kicks his shin in bed, then throws an equally drowsy 'sorry' at Jared before turning around and going back to sleep. Jared, already on his way to unconsciousness himself, mutters "don't worry, I love you", then spends the next fifteen minutes staring intently at Jensen's back, wide awake and heart pounding, waiting for some sign that Jensen heard him.

It doesn't come, and Jensen acts totally normal the next morning, even letting his head drop against Jared's shoulder to sneak in some more minutes of sleep on their drive to set.

When things start getting out of control, Jared considers consulting some experts - which, really, he should revise the use of that word, since said sources consist of a recently separated Chad Michael Murray, and Milo, who's dated his co-stars twice, and has had awful break-ups with co-stars the same number of times.

So Jared goes with what his gut tells him - literally - and takes Jensen to eat some steak, because nothing says 'I love you' to a Texan man like some good meat. Except that the universe, as always, is conspiring against Jared's plan, and they end up at a restaurant in which the woman that takes their orders recognizes them from the start and flirts with Jared through the entire night.

It doesn't help that Jensen does everything to encourage her just to see Jared's face turn every single color humanly possible, and he makes sure Jared pockets the phone number she so discreetly slips between their receipts.

Back in the car, as they're driving back home, Jensen's still laughing at the chick's pick-up lines. "I bet this isn't the largest piece of meat in here? How fucking cheesy is that?", and Jared can't help but joining him as they make a top-five or her lamest attempts at winning Jared's attention.

"I hate you," he tells Jensen between chuckles, and Jensen's hand on his thigh is probably the only highlight of the night.

After numerous other failed attempts - including but not limited to star-observing, home-made meals and buying Jensen ridiculously expensive and unnecessary things such as three watches in a week - and when matters reach the highest level in the chart of cheesiness with Jared hiring a plane to write the words in the sky only to have Jensen go inside to pee and not coming back in time, he decides to just sit down and tell him.

Jensen's been his best friend for years, and Jared's one to share every single thought that crosses his mind, so how hard can it be, right?

"Is this going anywhere? Because if we're gonna spend another hour in silence, I might as well go get some provisions," Jensen says. "Pizza okay?"

"No, sit down."

"Dude, since when do you say no to pizza? Since when do you say no to any food, really?"

Jared rolls his eyes. "Can you just - I want to tell you something."

"Okay."

Jared looks at Jensen straight in his eyes and doesn't hesitate. "I love you."

Jensen's expression falls slightly and Jared suddenly panics. "... Why do I sense a but coming here?"

Jared frowns. "What?"

"You know, 'I love you but this isn't working', 'I love you but I think we should take some time off'," Jensen lists off, his face going a bit paler and looking at Jared with the slightest uncertainty in his eyes. "That's how you start a conversation when you're going to break up with someone."

"Are you fucking insane? I'm not breaking up with you."

Jensen visibly relaxes. "Oh, okay, awesome. What is it, then?"

"I already told you."

"Yes, you love me, and?"

Jared feels his face heat up at the lack of reaction he's getting. "Dude, I've been trying to say it for weeks, and all you can say is and?"

"Weeks? Jared, you told me you loved me the day after we met," Jensen points out, his eyebrows raised.

"That's - that was different, this is different. I'm in love with you, like, real, relationship, might-consider-marriage-if-it-were-legal love," Jared replies, and his frown only deepens when he sees that Jensen still looks amused. "Why are you looking at me like that? You knew all this time I was in love with you and you didn't say anything?"

Jensen holds back a laugh. "Jay, we've been in love with each other for years. Everyone knows it."

Jared folds his arms across his chest. "Well, I didn't," he mutters, sinking a bit against the couch and staring at the wall in front of him, offended that Jensen has been keeping that secret from him for so long. Even if it's stupid, this relationship is special to Jared, and he deserved to know they were on the love stage already.

"Hey, don't be like that." Jensen scoots closer to him and punches him gently in the shoulder. "If it helps, it still made my stomach feel a bit weird when you said the words."

It does help. Jared shrugs, but he can't stop his lips from curving into a smile. "Well, whatever. I'm glad that's done with, anyway," he says, feeling a lot lighter.

"You wanna watch a movie?"

"Yeah."

Jensen gets up and returns a minute later with a DVD that promises enough explosions to keep their mind focused on anything but the conversation they've just had. Except that when they're laying in bed that night, Jared can hear Jensen shifting under the covers, then feels his warm breath hitting the side of his neck.

"I love you, you moron," Jensen whispers, before moving away so they can both have their space. "Please don't make this a thing," he adds in a much louder voice.

Jared chuckles and shakes his head. "Shut up."

He falls asleep with a smile on his face, and if his arm curls around Jensen's waist in the middle of the night, and if Jensen rests his temple against the top of Jared's head, well, it doesn't really make things much different from how they previously were.
