bog coats

Oct 18, 2005 15:44

I am teaching a class at the Ithra on how to make a bog coat. I know how to make them, and I know they are period (like even before), but I can't find any historical links on the net to put in my handout about history. I know the class itself is how to make one, but I like to prove to my students that it's period.....any ideas?

Vivienne of Shaftesbury taught a class on it in an Ithra over here a while ago- maybe contact her?

What period? Could be worth tackling the old fashionned way (hitting the books).

Who taught you? What sources do they have?

The only reference I found on the internet was a Danish guy was buried in it 2000 years ago. It's pre-SCA, but it's such a good pattern, with no waste, it makes sense that people would continue to use it. The find was preserved so well, that they could actually see what the guy ate.

I took a course at Estrella, and can't remember who taught it. She didn't get into the history, and that's something I like to include with my handout.

Let me mull it over a bit and see if I can't find you something. No promises.

It's a coat made out of a piece of fabric that is as wide, and as long as you want the coat to be. Really great use of fabric, no wasting. Search for it on the internet, they are still using it as a coat today.

Bog coats are based on paleolithic remains or about 2000 years old, so pretty far before the SCA started, but maybe also early northern? My findings didn't go that far forward in time.

There was also an article in Threads magazine a while back. "The Bog Coat: One-Seam Sophistication" by Susan B. Allen in issue No. 87, pp. 36-40.

correction, Bog Coat was taught by HL Pegg Leg, at Fibres and Fletching last August, 2005.
