So, two of my circle of friends just had/are going to have daughters. All the guys, my own boyfriend included, are making shotgun jokes. I ask WTF. "Girls grow up to date," he explained, "you need a shotgun to keep boys away".
????
Soooooo, fifteen or twenty years ago what were these same male friends doing? I am aware of the antiquated social conditioning that girls must remain chaste so her future husband feels secure that his children are his. What I didn't know is that people who are the same generation as I still believe this. Fucking really????? I asked who these guys dated in high school that they still bought into that garbage, but the boyfriend had turned back to his movie unwilling to answer. As much as I like to think there was homo-eroticism involved, I doubt that's the case for most of 'em.
This double standard was a huge wound in my childhood. I won't detail it, there was guilt, shouting, and not being allowed to go on any kind of date until after I moved out at 18 among other jewels designed to try and quash my spirit and natural human response. The idea that people of my own generation are wanting to visit that horror an a new crop of innocents makes me want to scream. That they are choosing to be fucktarded when they used to be the daughter-chasing boys they now fear makes me want to crush heads with rocks.
