One of life's greatest mine canaries

When I was much younger and cut off from any sort of D&D related contact, I downloaded and read a lot of weird, silly Dungeons and Dragons "reference" materials ( Read more... )

What's wrong Matt, you seem to always have something interesting to post. What happened tonight? Ran out of ideas?

Excellent entry; I enjoyed it.

Actually, I was more like an angry little twentysomething DM when I wrote the Blood Lich stuff years ago, and I see my mother on a regular basis, so that probably didn't factor in. However, you hit the nail on the head on all other counts; the monster is overwritten, overpowered, and is, not to put too fine a point on it, silly. It really grew out of a single question: is it possible for a vampire to become a lich, and if so, what would the result be? The rest is history, bizarre mechanics, and purple prose.

Even so, I had fun with it, and another gentleman that used to frequent rec.games.frp.dnd at the time gave me lots of feedback and help on rewrites. So, no matter how ridiculous you think the current incarnation is, I promise that my original drafts were far, far worse. :)

Anyway, thanks for giving the monster an honest assessment. Frankly, I'm flattered that anyone is still paying attention to it after all this time.

In retrospect, my coarse post was tasteless.

Not to put too fine a point on it, I myself am currently an angry twentysomething. But I don't have the balls to try and add to the legacy of D&D, like you did.

I have egg on my face; I have no better way to express it, in all its asininity and conspicuousness.

I honestly like your Sangrolu- I've kept what I printed for many years. I was just being silly, an effort that fell far short of my humorous intentions.

I'm sorry.

You took this much better than I would have. I hope that when I'm done growing, I can be measured by your yardstick and not be found wanting.

Hey, no worries. I honestly enjoyed your post, and if I can't laugh at myself, I'm not living right. Besides, I'd rather have honest snark than false praise. Much more educational. :)
