I have this idea for a geographically-based fic directory, and I want to chatter about it a little, and see what you guys think ( Read more... )

fandom: supernatural, pipe dreams what i've got, computers are our friends, on being a reader of fic

I don't do Supernatural, but if I understand you right, this sounds like a fantastic idea (says the map fetishist).

I have no practical help to offer, though, other than the practicalities of cheering loudly from the sidelines.

That writing cartography book you linked looks so interesting!

I think it would work in several fandoms, but SPN is particularly suited for it. The idea never occurred to me when I was reading solely HP.

I don't know if I'll do anything with it, but YAY you think it's cool, too! Sometimes it's hard to know if ideas are going to sound good once they get outside your head.

Very cool. coell December 7 2007, 11:21:08 UTC
That's very cool. I'm working on a Veggie Vegas google map and can see how it's both totally doable and totally tedious. For the fear of quantity or permission, you could set it up and have it be available for fics starting from release day on, with the option for authors to opt-in their previous works by submitting them via a form or email. I have plenty of hosting available with lots of account options if you need someone to host your project domain (my design business is grangegraphics.com) and I'd be fine donating that to the cause as long as it doesn't run up a huge bill ( ... )

You're a star. ♥ This comment made me so excited! First off, because it's not just me; you like the idea too. And then because you're very generous, thank you so much! And then because those are some great ideas, yay. I'm not ready to jump into it at this point, but I don't know... maybe eventually? I especially like the retro opt-in idea.

"Good for those who kink on location-rich stories." Yes. There are a lot of stories that could be set anywhere, but then there are some that are just steeped in the flavor of a particular place, you know? Those are the stories that I was thinking of, in particular. Heh, definite local-ness kink.

Ooh, what's Veggie Vegas?

It's a blog/map about vegetarian restaurants/options in Las Vegas. It's a town of buffets and over-the-top meat -- and not a lot of attention is given to vegetarian options, so I'm tinkering with putting my own out there. Some people have their own lists on the web, but they must not share info, because they each have stuff the others don't -- so why don't I combine them all and add those none of them have.

In case you want to tinker yourself (not to be confused with diddling or piddling yourself), I set up an account for you on my hosting service; I'll email you the details.

That would be fabulous and interesting and I'd like to support it (I adore maps). If you hit a point where you need helping hands please consider counting me in.

The SPN canon map thing is also dead cool; I just downloaded it and I love, love, love it.

Oh YAY! If I ever get it going, I'll definitely take you up on that. Seeing your amazing del.icio.us thing was one reason I decided to go ahead and talk about this.

You liked it, hee! *bounces* Thank you! I haven't worked on it at all this season, yet.
