When I do papers, we get in trouble if we use contractions but with term papers you are required to be formal with your writing style. Personally, I don't want to read something that feels so strict. I prefer to read something that I can imagine people saying. I rarely hear people saying "I cannot make it tonight". o__O With all the horrible spellings and slang accepted in speech, I don't think "can't" and "won't" are at the top of list for worries.

I could understand with that kind of thing, but... using it in fiction would make it sound so wonky. o_o Especially dialogue! Not using contractions in dialogue is something you deliberately do when you want the character to sound really formal.

mmm...in my literature class i couldn't do contractions, but my other english class and all other ones that have term papers seem to be all good...mmm. Maybe because it's a childrens book? and some can't do that whole contraction thing? but then that also depends on what age group you're writing for...hmmmm...
