This is established local tradition

I have pretty much never gotten on the escalator at a T station without there being at least one person standing on the wrong side, and I commute on the T. Calling it "established" is a wee bit hyperbolic.

It's also an "established" tradition to be loudly offended when someone objects to their blocking the whole escalator.

I have never seen that. There's occasionally some passive-aggressive "standing too close", or an "excuse me", but I haven't seen "loudly offended".

Of course, neither my anecdotes nor yours are "data". I'd be interested in a formal study...

There's also the reminder that should you be on a crowded T while wearing a backpack the size of a small toddler, take it off and put it at your feet. Because if you slam it into me one more one I will feed it to you, bite by bite.
