The one thing I learned from raising a kitten to adulthood was that if you want a touchy, cuddly cat, you have to touch & cuddle them. Not to the point of torture, obviously, but I was very hands-on with my cat & she has grown up to be affectionate & more dog-like, which I love. My friend's cat has always been more skittish (there is some account for personality), but she will not let ANYONE, even my friend, pick her up, & I believe this is in part because my friend did not get her used to it at a young age.
So I guess my advice, in a nutshell, is to think about what kind of adult cat you want & to start socializing little Doc to be that cat. It's not failsafe, of course, but it can't hurt.
1) Make sure you don't leave any laying around because they can get tangled up in them and suffocate. If you have a big paper bag, you can leave that out. Cairo loved the paper bag and it's much safer.
2)The meowing: he may just scared because he's in a new place, or he might be vocal like Cairo. You'll have to wait and see. The squirming: pick him up a lot, it's the only way he'll get used to being handled and now is the best time.
3) Wires: sprinkle cayenne pepper on them and he won't bite them. I also have this bitter apple stuff that you can get at pet stores that works well. To avoid scratching on furniture, double sided tape apparently works well.
4) With the scratching post, encourage him using it by playing around and on it. Cairo really only uses the scratching post (and the inside of our boxe spring :S).

haha my cat is now a year old and STILL loves paper bags. I think cats just love the crinkly sound they make when they move.
can't wait for pictures!
