if you want him to not meow at your door you have to not let him in. Starting immediately. Or else he will A) Learn that he belongs in there and B) learn that meowing to get in works.
I figured as much. So I have a question - when I go to sleep, should I leave him to roam in the main part of the apartment, or put him in a small room (ie the bathroom) with his litter, food and water and his carrying crate (which has a towel in the bottom and one of my shirts)?

He probably will meow at the door but he'll stop when he figures out it's not getting him anywhere.
