i wish one of my parents would tell me i'd turned out exactly how they hoped.

i want to make sure that my kids know they will always be that to me. how could they not?

i think it's safe to say i've had a sufficiently emo morning.

It has to do with unreasonable expectations, darling. Just because you didn't turn out the way they'd hoped doesn't devalue you any; the fact that you're healthy, well-adjusted, in a university program, employed (? I think?), self-sufficient, street-smart, etc. should be enough for a parent, and if it's not, it speaks to their failure, not yours. Parents can't plan for their children's individuality, and those who try to are engaging in a futile exercise. Parents who can't deal with their kids' uniqueness are the only ones who get disappointed, because they set themselves up that way. Don't let their lack of understanding turn into your sadness.
