Girugamesh
The polished melody
All about the new album "GO" that's about to become a big hit
Girugamesh will be releasing their 5th album "GO" in the beginning of 2011.
The track to describe the album is "destiny", a power number with energetic sound and melodious singing, which are their current essence.
For this interview I infiltrated the PV filming of that song to bring you the latest visual and analyze "GO" thoroughly.
Let's ride their wave to the challenge of their first hall oneman in their local Chiba on February 5th and world tour "Here we go!!" with 9 lives in 6 countries beginning in March, 2 years after their last world tour.
What kind of themes did you pursue when creating your new album "GO"?
Ryo: We didn't really have a theme. Usually we decide a concept before we start making songs, but this time we wanted to make it broader. We decided roughly that there would be three heavy songs and three melodious songs... we only had that kind of ratio when we began production. So even we didn't know what kind of album it would become.
Shuu: This time we didn't have a concept, so we began making songs thinking it'd be okay if we could just make good songs. But I didn't have a mental image of a pitch black album, so I didn't go towards that direction when creating songs. Then we listened to everyone's demos, and sure enough, they weren't dark. I was happy to see that we were all facing the same direction even though we hadn't discussed it.
Nii: The production of this album has been the most tiring. I made lots of songs for the album and everyone made demos. Then we listened to them all back-to-back. Usually they're all good, but this time I thought the feeling was not right. I wanted to go one step further, and because of that I couldn't really do anything. "Destiny" was created with that feeling, and it became the trigger. I think I was saved by that song. It felt really good to finish it.
Satoshi: This time I had no idea what the songs would be like. There were parts I wasn't sure about, but I was able to see it when we finished "destiny". It's originally catchy, because it's a merged song where a heavy riff opens the hook. By creating this song we created the image of the whole album. That also goes for lyrics. The feeling of the hook in "destiny" was very inspirational when I heard it. It felt bright, nice and warm. That's why I wanted to give warmth to all the lyrics on this album. Warmth of people who live their life supporting each other. I wanted to portray that kind of thing when I tackled the lyrics.
You haven't had pure love songs like "destiny" and "Mienai kyori" before this.
Satoshi: Right. Until now I've been singing about my experiences in the band and things I've felt when we've gone overseas. This time I was only working on this song, and I wanted to make the lyrics loveable, too. That's what I thought when I began writing them, and that's what I wrote. The melody and lyrics were created simultaneously. We haven't done that before. "GO" is also the first album where I've written lyrics instinctively.
There were lots of firsts in the production of "GO".
Ryo: There were lots. In recording, too. Until now we've recorded orchestra all together, but this time we recorded all instruments separately, because we wanted to do it more properly. This time I'm satisfied with my playing. Even though the recording of drums was really slow (laugh). I mean, it took a long time. Because I didn't want to compromise. It took three full days to record eight songs. To name a song that left an impression, it would be "Never ending story". It's a new area for us in both musical and playing aspect. Until now our songs have flied in a different way. It's not blown away but rather has a more vivid feeling. The tempo is very quick, too. We don't have other songs with this kind of super fast beat. The drums are the worst (laugh).
The feeling of speed is the best part of "Never ending story". Speaking of lyrics, it's a song, but it also has a message to the fans, right?
Satoshi: In this song, I sing about how everyone shares the same feelings of joy and sadness and how we live supporting each other... When I heard the song, a thought of how there's kindness even inside sadness ran through my mind. I wanted to cherish it, so I wrote the lyrics. I'll let the listeners intepret themselves who I'm singing it to.
Shuu: Speaking of new things, I was impressed by "13 days". I've been into funk lately. I was listening to Jamiroquai again and digging into funk a little. That's how the original version of "13 days" was born. Ryo had a song that was of a same type, and he said we should combine them. We talked how we should use this and this part of this song and this part of this song. Then we tried playing my original phrase with Ryo's chord progress. We tried a lot of things before it fell into this shape. Also, "Mienai kyori"'s bass was tiring, and when I heard "Saikai", I was impressed by how good it was.
You're also playing funky bass in "Mienai kyori".
Shuu: It's gutsy? This is a song where the bass holds the key to the groove. That's why I thought I really had to practice it (laugh). I feel like I've again got to a new place as a bassist. "Saikai" is a good song, and I could also see the bass lines right away. There was a part that looked like a bass solo, so I asked the others to leave it for bass. I liked the song so much. But the staff said the bass solo doesn't feel like Shuu-kun and asked if it would be okay (laugh). They asked me to reduce tremolo to half, but I said I couldn't do it any other way and went through with my opinion. I also like playing the melody to the verse at the end of the song.
For the first time you've ended up with ballads like Saikai.
Ryo: It's the first time we've used eight chords in one section or used techniques like changing a key half-way. For a long time I've wanted to play parts in different keys or sharp everything by a half tone. It took a long time before this song found its final shape.
Satoshi: "Saikai" left an impression on me, too. I turned my MC from the final of FALL TOUR 2010 into lyrics. I get a lot of letters from people who, for all kinds of reasons, don't come to see Girugamesh's lives anymore, and they're all expressing regret. I turned into lyrics what I feel when I read those of words.
Is that why the lyrics are so refreshing even though they are about being separated?
Satoshi: Yes. It's also about that. Till now we've made ballads, but they've been painful, a little dark and feel miserable. "Saikai" is the first ballad where there's light at the end. I didn't want to destroy it, so it became like that.
Reading the lyrics of "GO", I feel like Satoshi-kun has took a change towards a more popular direction.
Satoshi: I listen to pop all the time. I've soaked up the music I listened to as a kid and I've had lots of influence. I think it can now been noticed.
Nii: For me, it's "MISSION CODE" that's left an impression. It revives the things that were born during FALL TOUR 2010. On that tour, each member had their own solo scene. When we were arranging that song, Shuu thought it would be interesting if we did that. So we made sections where everyone would pack their signature stuff. We also used a talking modulator. We used it because we thought it was lonely to only use it during "sunrise" at lives (laugh). Melody-vise is digital, a fusion with the stance our sound has taken after "NOW", and it should make the lives livelier. I'm looking forward to playing it live.
I think so, too. How was the guitar play this time?
Nii: The guitar approach hasn't really changed after "NOW". I'm still bringing in a banging guitar and making effort to consciously lead with the guitar. Most importantly, I've lately been putting in all the sounds I've wanted to. Then I've taken the songs to the studio, had everyone listen and take out all that's not important... creating songs like that. I put in all the ideas that I get and let others select. I have confidence in all the phrases I let the others listen, and I don't really care about which one is picked. On contrary, when they ask for a certain kind of sound, I will make it up. That's how the songs were created even this time, one by one.
Isn't it most important to check that there are enough songs with guitar solos?
Nii: Sure enough, there have been lots of guitar solos (laugh). I want to play them, so I take them on with a positive attitude. Usually guitar solos are very important for the flow of the song, but with "Saikai" I really had to think about it. I make uncommon patterns. I had to think about expressing the song's atmosphere and strong phrases. I think the solo became worth the time I spent on it.
Satoshi: I had to pay mind to the song's atmosphere with lyrics. My speciality are groovy songs that use the rhythm, but this time my goal was stronger vibrato with extended notes. It's also good to play on your strong points, but I thought I'd have to overcome my weak parts. I was really bad with melodies with exended notes. I found a solution with trial and error. I think I found the right answer with trying. Speaking of songs, "MISSION CODE" left an impression on me. Some parts are sung strongly, some lightly. I've changed the style of singing in the middle of a song once before, but this is the first time I'm changing strength. This album has lots of variety, so I wanted to express lots of things with singing, too. That's why we ended up with approaches like "MISSION CODE".
That's very like you. How about the ballad "Saikai"?
Satoshi: Until now I've mostly been singing on rhythm, but in "Saikai" there's "sasaete kureta yasashisa mo..." at the end of the guitar solo. It has nothing to do with rhythm, I'm just singing how I feel. It was suggested by the staff, and I tried it and found it to be a good approach. I challenged myself to let my feelings out, so "Saikai" became an important song for me.
I enjoyed the richness of everyone's play. You also don't want to miss "GO"'s "gekiatsu edition" with a second disc wih live material and a 120-minute dvd.
Shuu: Artist usually only use live material as b-sides of singles. When I was a kid, I didn't like it when they did that. I wanted to hear new songs instead of live takes. But I started to think it'd be good to do a live album. It could bring the scene of the live back to mind. However, we didn't know what the fans would think about it, so we asked in Ryo's Twitter and during my MCs at lives. Surprisingly many people said they wanted it, so we recorded FALL TOUR 2010's final at Yokohama Bay Hall and put it on a cd. The dvd "Summary of secret Girugamesh" sums up everything about Girugamesh. Please look forward to it, because there are lots of facts and backstage material.
Ryo: I really want you to listen to the live cd, because we finished it with a good feeling. It's a real Girugamesh live in a package. The dvd was again edited by Shuu, but it seems his perception of balance has changed. All the members got the same amount of screen time, so we could put in lots of interesting things (laugh). You should look toward to the contents of the dvd, too.
Nii: I think it's good that the dvd looks back to Girugamesh in 2010. I'd already forgotten we did a live at Shinkiba Coast in January (laugh). We looked at the tapes together and were surprised that Coast was this year (laugh). It feels like it was already two years ago. 2010 has been so busy it feels like two years (laugh). Please take a good look at that Girugamesh. About the live cd, I didn't like them either. I would rather hear new songs, but recently I've listened to Slipknot's live cd and started thinking that it could be interesting. It's different from studio sound, because some parts are only done at lives. So I decided it's something I want to do. I like this live cd and I believe listeners will like it, too.
Satoshi: Don't listeners come to lives because of albums? They come to lives if the like albums. I think it'll be easier to come because "GO"'s "gekiatsu edition" already has a live cd. It may also be interesting to first listen to the live cd and then studio cd. I think we made the right decision by including the live cd. From the dvd you'll learn that we're a band that thinks birthdays are very important (laugh). I thought it was already enough, but of course we ended up celebrating everybody's birthdays (laugh).
Ryo: We're just upgrading (laugh).
Shuu: Not everybody's. We didn't celebrate my birthday! (laugh) Because my birthday (December 26th) last year was the day becofe JACK IN THE BOX.
Satoshi: Yeah. Is there anything we can do about it? We don't celebrate your birthday every year.
Nii: How about changing your birthday? Let's change it to the day of JACK IN THE BOX (laugh).
Shuu: Well... (laugh) But this year I have expectations. Because I personally gave everyone else a present on their birthdays. I think I should be getting great presents in return (laugh).
Please tell us what kind of presents. I'm looking forward to Girugamesh that begins year 2011 with a great album like "GO".
Satoshi: We're looking forward to it, too. "GO" became a vivid album. Songs, melodies, lyrics, playing, everything is vivid. I've always wanted to make something like it, but I was lost because I didn't quite know where to start. It's an album that tells you to fill your heart with confidence, so I'd like more people to hear it. After we release "GO" in January 2011, we're having a live at our local Ichikawa Cultural Hall on February 2nd. It's the day when we'll be announcing "GO" big time. We will also be showing the new look of Girugamesh, so I wish everyone moves their feet to Ichikawa.
Nii: I believe "GO" has our best songs by far. I think it exceeded the expectations and I'm excited about it (laugh). Like the four of us have grown a little. Like Satoshi said, next year we'll first have a live at Ichikawa. After that we'll tour overseas, which we haven't done in two years. In 2011 I want to do fun things. Even the title is "GO" (laugh). I want to go running (laugh).
Ryo: If I had to describe "GO" in one word, it'd be "crayon". There are lots of colors and it became a gorgeous masterpiece. Listening to the songs, you'll notice that there are lots of melodious pieces, but I think you can also smell the sweat (laugh). We've been machos before, but this time we took it in the other direction, and I'm happy it shows on the album. I'm also looking forward to playing "GO"'s songs live. There will be lots more to come. Please look towards to what "GO"'s songs will look like live. In 2011 we will be raising "GO"'s songs at lives to come up with a good shape for future work.
Shuu: Like everyone else, I really believe in "GO". People have their likes and dislikes, but I think "GO" will surpass them. I think it's that good. It's what we were aiming for. A package of good songs that bring enrgy to lives. I feel like we hit what we were aiming for. For 2011, I'm already looking forward to our next performances. We don't even know ourself where we're going next. From next year on, we'll also play "GO"'s songs at lives, and I think it'll broaden our show and create a good flow. I want to make it a year to open new doors by interweaving old songs with "GO"'s songs at lives.
