On Vox: Sad News out of San Francisco

Jun 12, 2007 09:23

One of my Castro based Live Journal friends posted up that Welcome Home closed after a 30 year run on Castro Street.

This makes me very sad.

I made a point to have at least one meal there when I visited town. The service and portions were always great.

I'll miss it.

Can someone get some pictures and post up so we have them before it goes away for good ( Read more... )

I have been seeing a trend recently of family owned businesses or small business closing after being around for a generation or two.

Now I feel bad for all the times that Z suggested we brunch there, and I said no. I swear that it was only ever because their breakfast portions were so large. They made a mean BLT with A, though. now I'm craving one. I hope they're not closed yet, so I can at least visit once more.

I'd usually get a burger there or the chicken tenders.

Did we go there? I think we did.

I thought so. My last night in town I believe when I had to move back to the Castro Apt?

Aww, man. That place was a mainstay of mine back in the 90s when I lived next street over on Collingwood. Good basic all-Amurkin comfort food, great old-school Castro 'hood atmosphere. I always felt welcome there.

That's probably what killed it - too comfortable & community and not fancy and metallic enough. Now it'll be bought by one of the two guys who now own everything in the Castro and turned into an upscale gymqueen/twink-luring noodle fusion place with superloud sound system thumping out dance music so loud you can't hear your dining partner(s).

They tried that with the Likewise and look what happened.
I really liked it there and you hit the nail on the head with the old school Castro hood atmosphere. The name of the place applied to what it was all about.

I guess the Cove gets more of my business.
