A long time ago an acquaintance of ours named Janet got upset because Victor posted something on his Facebook page calling God an invisible alien. I never saw this e-mail before, so it's kind of surprising to me to see it here...it's not at all what I'd imagined the e-mail would sound like, based upon the reaction.

In general, I think you're right. A person's character is measured through actions, and when it is reflected through words, it's often what others say about someone that's heard more than what someone says about himself (although that's not necessarily right, either; most people are notoriously biased in their judgments of others.)

The best way to be "insert adjective here" is to demonstrate to others that you possess that quality, rather than just telling everyone. It's funny how many stories I hear from people every week that start with "I'm a nice person, but..." or "I'm not one to judge, but..." or "I'm not into gossip, but...". It always makes me laugh.
