Dear Authors,

When authors take the time to respond to a child's interest in their books, it is a BIG deal. Just saying.

(I'm not talking about the "Will you do my homework?" kind of letters.) The genuine, your book really means something to me, kind of letters.

Thanks for taking the time.

Laurie Halse Andersen wrote back to me when I e-mailed her a letter to let her know that Speak was a completely unique book for me- it truly captured what being an outsider in a world of cliques felt like, and her method of storytelling was totally different from the other book's I had read. I was in ninth grade. In her e-mail reply, she thanked me for writing and told me that she was sorry that my high school felt like the one in the novel, but that it sounded like I had a "strong sense of self" and would make it through. I have carried the phrase "strong sense of self" in my mind ever since.

See, this is what I'm talking about! I just think it is the best and means so much. I <3 authors who go above and beyond. I will buy a book from an author who takes the time before I will buy a book from an author who is known not too.
