It did turn out quite shota-ish - little guy on the back looks like he's going to call the other guy "Onii-san" and kiss him on the cheek. :3 I agree though, the second one has more emotion in the characters' expressions and pose.
Ah...I kinda see what your teacher means with that first page; the current shading makes it look like the girl's hair is two-toned, like Hikaru from Hikaru no Go. Sux that you had so much trouble with the white ink. Maybe it's something that gets easier to use the more experience you have...?
Well it's her face looking at the intense light of heaven, so the teacher thought the side of her being hit with the strong light should have white ink breaking some of the black. I looked at Dogs for reference of intense light and characters usually end up having like half of their head becoming black, but I see the need to add even white on, it's just annoying D; You have to keep adding water to the white or else it doesn't cooperate...};
