Quote: Everyone, gay, straight, asexual, pansexual, kinky, non-monogamous, etc etc etc can be part of the queer community in my mind. We’re all in this together after all, right? Why should we alienate our allies and kin over words? Why do I feel like this lovely statement of togetherness has some major blind spots and frustrates the fuck out of me ( Read more... )

1) include "everyone" devalues the political clout of a concept (or whatever the hell "queer community" is) for people by people who are NOT mainstream. ie all you will end up doing is expanding the definitions to refer to the mainstream, you won't expand people's minds to consider the outer edges of sexual behaviour as being mainstream. (er coz they aren't by definition ( ... )

Hmm I think you need to define what is meant by queer community, if it's a head space, then I can't see why we all can't be part of that community.

What do I mean by headspace? well I guess that could be a massive debate right their but I have to stop procrastinating and go do some work.

I've always thought labels are best when people get to define themselves. If someone identifies with the queer community and they feel like they belong there, they should be able to be a part of it.

I really hate it in the bdsm community when people get on this "I'm a true submissive because I do this stuff you don't do" or whatever bullshit. If someone identifies as submissive and wants to call themselves submissive, that's what they are, and they get to play however they want. It's their choice. I don't know if people do the same kind of thing like "I'm a REAL queer, not like THOSE people..." but that would annoy the shit out of me.
