Ah, Wing Commander... brilliant! Don't think I ever played Privateer, though. For me, it'd have to be Baldur's Gate. I'll be checking out Dragon Age at some point just based on the company.

The Fallout series always grabbed me.
Fallout 3 (which you should be able to pick up for cheap now - and it's expansions) held my attention right through to the end. I felt a little let down by the epilogue, but don't let that detract from the overall game.

I'll also throw in my 2 cents about Dragon Age: Origins.
Avoid it.
Granted I played it on the Xbox 360 so it might be different for the PC. I found it clunky and didn't allow for any flexibility. There were too many times where I had to drop the difficulty level down to easy to get past certain points. After about 5 hours of trying to finish the last fight, I gave up and gave it back to my friend to lent it to me.
If you get it on PC, my suggestion would be to get a hack.

Personally, I'm waiting for Diablo III. :)
