GRE

I took the GRE. It was fine. Annoyingly long, but enh. I do, however, have serious doubts as to the validity of any test that rates my math skills more highly than my verbal skills. At least they weren't far apart, since I'm applying to a program that straddles the abyss between comp sci and comp lit... I have decided to study (if I can, this is) ( Read more... )

That was the goal, but I can't tell if it will be too late to study and take it before applications are due in december. Thoughts?

It's a lot like the SAT. And the score reports are faster. I think you can still make it if you start looking at a test prep book real soon.

Are you basing the verbal vs. math thing on raw score or on percentile? My recollection is that the verbal score for any given percentile is much lower than the math score for the same percentile.

Scores. I don't know the percentages yet, but based on past years, my verbal percentage will still outstrip my math one. Neither one is bad however. And I was initially concerned about math since that's one issue with straight humanities majors going into linguistics. They worry about the math and whether we'll be able to do semantics and run/write the computer programs for analyzing stuff. To cover my ass I took semantics and discrete math, but I'm still woefully behind on computers. Showing mathmatical reasoning potential can't hurt.

I tend to think mathematical reasoning is a good thing. ;-)

As for the percentiles, I don't know if it has changed much; but when I took it, my 800 math was 92nd percentile and 670 verbal was 94th. So, the scales on the two section really have nothing to do with each other.
