abigail solomon-godeau was a good friend of my mother's. i didn't know much about her work (which is dumb, because i majored in art history at an all women's college), just remembered my mom saying she was in the guerrilla girls at one point. the one time i met her, her chain-smoking and voice scared me--probably because i was 8 and a baby conservative. i really like her writing, researching her now, though. small worlds/situations.

She's pretty wonderful. I met her for the first time last year, but we've hung out a couple of times now (I occasionally help her move her boxes and boxes of books and art magazines around). She's so smart, and having her come to talk to the students was the best; they LOVED her. I was totally impressed at how she came in with this talk, more or less about Christian Boltanski, but over the course of it really catered it to the four women that were there (normally I have five students, but one was in traffic court today). It was this hybrid lecture-conversation. She would catch so quickly what each student was trying to do with her work, and had excellent feedback and suggestions for them.
She still loves her cigarettes. She didn't smoke in class of course, but I know that since she's moved to SF she's always feeling like she has to sneak in her smokes. It's not a very smoker friendly town, and there's no way she's going to quit at this point.
I hope to hang more with her this year. I learn things every time I do.
