Technogook for the nerdy

I've been asked to build a computer for my wonderful diabetic boss, Adrian. He wants his kids to have a good media machine, and to be able to get his email and play online poker. I've spent the last several hours compiling a list of parts that, though a little bit over the budget that I previously quoted of "$400-500," I believe the mild price ( Read more... )

Do you really need the modem and floppy drives? Most external storage plugs into USB nowadays. Modems are only needed if you ever plan to hook it up to dial-up which is why I skipped those on my build.

The video card, in my opinion, is not optional if you get Windows XP. It takes a toll on the system. Not as much as I hear Vista does though.

You could save a bunch of cash monies by putting Ubuntu (my favorite Linux) on it instead of Windows. If you're not playing games/using software that are OS specific, then I don't see why not.

well now that I've looked closely, a floppy drive is already built into the 7 in 1 media reader. the modem is needed because my boss operates on 56k and doesn't intend to change that any time soon.

read it again hob, this system is going to be for my boss's kids. They don't know how to work Linux, and to have them begin trying would be a futile waste.

Yeah, the card is pretty much vital. I'm going to try and press for the Home Edition because Vista is so damned expensive/ doesn't have 7 years of support built into it so it is quite vulnerable.

Check out the link on slickdeals to the dell. It's essentially the same thing, but prepackaged and cheaper, so he won't have to figure out how keep the computer going should something crap out.

As far as linux goes Ubuntu is pretty simple. It works like windows, granted it doesn't look exactly the same. The last version (I havnt tried the new one yet) had 4 desktops, a GUI for the wireless, start menu, task bar, and all that jazz.

yeah but what about install? I used it at school briefly, but I wasn't overwhelmingly thrilled. Plus I like being able to play classic games for windows, ie: Deus Ex, Freelancer, Starcraft, Black & White 2. How does Ubunto hold up to playing these type of PC games ( ... )
