Background info on your character:
If Genkai could be described in one word, that word would be bamf. She is not going to tolerate anyone's crap and has no problems saying whatever it is that's on her mind. She will be blunt, she'll be harsh and she will beat you upside the head if you deserve it. Genkai is a no-nonsense woman and, quite frankly, prefers to be left alone.
She wasn't always like that though. I mean, yes, she has always been to whip someone into place even in her younger years, but she hasn't always been this stubborn old woman. Back in her younger years she was a beautiful woman and was both the lover and fellow team-mate of the younger of the two Toguro brothers. She spent time training, fighting and the occasional moments of rare peace and quiet being around Toguro. But despite all her power and training, there was simply no possible way she could have stopped or even save Toguro after announcing his prize at the end of the Dark Tournament. The grief he experienced at the loss of his students wasn't anything she could help him cope with. So on that day, when he had chosen to become a demon, Genkai abandoned her past and returned to the Human World to live out the rest of her life, alone.
Well, she was allowed roughly fifty-years of solitude that was only occasionally interrupted whenever demons wanted to dig their own graves. Seriously now, can't she just get some peace and quiet? No? --Oh, fine then. But in her old age Genkai came to realize that it was time for her to choose a successor to inherit the Spirit Wave technique she had spent her entire life perfecting. So when the time finally came the old woman had made the decision to hold a tournament to determine the best suited candidate to be her pupil and successor. And wouldn't you know it, said pupil turns out to be some loud-mouth smart-ass punk by the name of Yusuke Urameshi. Honestly now. Does somebody up there have something against her? I mean, honestly. Can't she catch a break? Ever?
No? Oh, wait, we haven't gotten to the Dark Tournament. Well sh-- ... anyway.
Fast forward a bit through the months Genkai spent whipping Yusuke into gear and basically making his time spent there a nightmare coated in Hell. The guy probably still has bad dreams to this day about it. But the results of her training turned out not to be in vain when the Dark Tournament came around yet again. After being invited to attend it without being given the option to decline, Genkai disguised herself (because tying a piece of clothe around your head is, apparently, a brilliant disguise) and became the fifth member of Team Urameshi. From then on things progress like any typical tournament saga in any shonen series: characters get the shit beaten out of them, some plot development here and there, cat girls and half naked women, and lotsa dead people. Although we have mostly Toguro to thank for that. (Remember kids: gambling is a health hazard. Remember that.) When she is originally unmasked during the battle against Team Ichigaki, instead of the withered old woman, everyone sees a rather beautiful pink-haired lady. This lead to much confusion for both Team Urameshi as well as the later fight with Shishiwakamaru. But that isn't important. What is important is that after Genkai has Yusuke par-take in the final test she dies.
That's right. Genkai dies. I'll give you a moment to let that sink in.
Okay. Moment over.
Botan brings Genkai's spirit to the Spirit World where she observes the remainder of the Tournament from above (this is pure speculation mind you since nothing is actually shone, but it's a nice idea). During the final match between Toguro and Yusuke Genkai's spirit tales possession of Puu and gets involved, telling Toguro that if he wants Yusuke to fight at his full power, then he needs to go and off one of his buddies. Nice one, Genkai. And apparently her punishment for that is Yusuke wishing for her to come back to life after he won the Tournament. There goes her so called peaceful afterlife. But before her return she speaks with Toguro one final time. She tries to convince him that he doesn't have to endure the hell he had chosen for himself but her words fall on deaf ears. With this one final chance on hand, she bids farewell to her once friend and lover, watching him leave to accept the punishment he deemed right for himself.
So for about a month everything seems to go back to normal. That is until Genkai finds herself being approached by brand new psychics that have been suddenly developing powers. It is under her guidance that she trains them to control their powers before using them to test Yusuke and remind him as to how much a hot-headed idiot he is. During the entire Chapter Black Saga Genkai is seen as more of a supporting character as she works with Yuusuke and the rest to stop Sensui, his men and stop Sakyo's original plan from happening. In the end Genkai is one of the people who explains to Yusuke that he can no longer stay in the Human World after his demon blood awoken during the fight with Sensui.
During the Three Kings Saga Genkai is later on seen training Chuu, Jin, Touya, Renku, Shishiwakamaru and Suzuka at Kurama's request for the Demon World Tournmanet. Think Yuusuke's training but worse. Genkai? Being kind in her old age? Forget that.
And for the remainder of the series and into the mini-episodes that were later released, Genkai remained living in her temple with Yukina keeping her company.
So. The moral of this story?
Respect your elders. They can and will kick your ass.

I may be old but I wouldn't have forgotten a trip to the beach. For one, this isn't even the same one close to my temple. Second, I was in my temple a moment ago. And my tea is getting cold back where I last had it. I don't know where I am or where this place is, but it's not where I was just a second ago.
Hm.
This area spans out quite a distance. The beach extends for as far as I can see but there's nothing recognizable about it. Some buildings, that much I can tell, but none I've seen before. And my temple is no where in sight either.
Hmph. I don't know how I got here to begin with, but there had better be someone around here that can give me answers. ...This is ridiculous. I thought I was done with this nonsense. Whatever it is that's going on here I don't want any part of it. I'd rather go back to where I came from and remain there. I'm not one for vacations or surprise trips like this either. One island was enough for me, along with everything that came with it.
