We were driving to my FIL's house yesterday, and we drove past the most adorable little one-chicken chicken coop that was for sale. I asked my Beloved, jokingly, if we could stop and get it, because I've always wanted to raise a chicken. He, not unexpectedly, said no, throwing out that he felt that chickens are only meat animals, not pets ( Read more... )

Sometimes kids surprise us. :)

My mother couldn't deal with eating their rabbits, but chickens were ok (mostly, I think, because she couldn't cuddle with the chickens).

Still, I think it's good for kids to realize that, if they are going to eat meat, then this real live animal will be their food someday. It creates a connection that is otherwise lost. It's part of the same reason we grow vegetables. We can't grow enough to really feed us, but we can grow enough for my son to occasionally get food the he saw from seed.

Anyway, that's my way of saying, YAY!

Yep, I've always felt the same way. I don't expect my kids to go out and butcher their own meat, but I want them to understand their place in the way the world turns.

So, they've seen a pig roasting on a spit that still LOOKS like a pig, and they've seen live pigs. They've seen a deer, hanging from a hook waiting to be butcherd, and gotten a good look at the organs, and they've seen live deer. Ditto with chickens and such.

We keep trying to grow food from seed, but sadly, I seem to really really suck at that. We've had some success with seedlings though, some berries and tomatoes once, before we found out that I really can't eat those.

And, though they've all seen the live and dead versions of their food animals, they still are very comfortable with eating meat. BUT, they realize what it IS that they're eating, and they are more appreciative of it.
