Moffatt pulls a 'RTD'

May 22, 2012 09:19

I didn't like the last season of Doctor Who

Therefor according to Moffatt, I must be stupid.

Give me a fucking break.

Just because you've made it to the top, it doesn't mean everyone should kiss your ass.

Humility is such a virtue ...

I agree with you there.

Thank you! It just angers me when people take their success for granted!

Oh dear - do you have a link to this? I guess I shouldn't be surprised that men, especially priviliged white men who write sci-fi don't take criticism well, but sigh, how about a 'that's a shame. But you can't please everybody,' type of reply.

It can be read here: http://www.entertainmentwise.com/news/76365/Doctor-Who-And-Sherlock-Writer-Steven-Moffat-Brands-Critics-Stupid

Honestly, I don't understand what is up to the Who writers. So far only James Moran has been nice and correct about stuff. He's seriously lost some brownie points. He could've easily said what you suggested or be a little bit more humble about it!

This is sounding more and more like comments JK Rowling made towards the end of the HP books. Some people think "success" means "everyone must love me".

I did not care for the last season either (am I the only person in the fandom who dislikes River Song?). You are not alone!

Thank you!
I started out adoring the pants off River Song but I hate what they turned her into! I wish they never had continued with the 'River is Amy's baby' story arc. Far too domestic and slightly creepy!

And yup, except that success is fickle and not everyone has to love you lol it worries and angers me that so many Brits especially are willing to ignore anything just because they're on Doctor Who.
I've had countless of comments like 'omg you can't say anything bad about Russell T Davies or Moffatt, they brought back Doctor Who!'
But that doesn't fly with me ... I'm from Belgium and nobody knows Dr Who here so *shrugs* it doesn't such a big deal to me.

Here in America, it is part of geek/fringe culture so...much the same! I don't feel bad about voicing my opinion if I feel someone is being stupid, and Moffatt is definitely doing that.

She rubbed me the wrong way from the beginning, but the whole Melody Pond reveal was WAAAY over the top. The only way I will be able to stomach her now, I think, is if we get some wibbly-wobbly that reveals she is Susan's grandmother. Would it make her a Sue? (Already there IMO.) Absolutely, but as we never met the Doctor's wife, it would at least make her a Sue with a basis in canon.

I like what you say about success being fickle! She is a little tart, indeed--and she runs away faster if mistreated (I.e., don't insult the fans who made the success in the first place!).

Yup :)

Just like RTD alienated a ton of fans after the CoE backlash ... he would've held on to many fans if he had just been a bit friendlier. And now it seems that Torchwood isn't doing too great ... there's one thing that's priceless and that's the loyalty of the fans. Like it or not, they have to be happy with you or else they won't spend their dough on you.

The one thing I regret is that Jack and River got to meet ;)
That would be ... spectacular!

Hm... When I first read your entry, I have to admit I found myself disappointed in Moffat - I thought he'd know better than to put his foot in his mouth like that.

However, having read the entry... It may just be me, but I don't read what he said as having a go at people who didn't like the show at all, only at the criticism that the shows he writes are "too complex for the average viewer". Which might be splitting hairs, true... Dunno, I'm probably a lot less bothered about that comment because, to be honest, I get really annoyed at silly, plotless shows and anything that grabs my interest enough to put down the knitting is a welcome change!

But, yeah, I can understand it coming across as annoying. One day, writers will learn to keep their mouths shut... hopefully!

Even then it's an idiotic thing to say ... so he's pretty much saying that that whatever he writes is only comprehendable for the upper 25 percentile of the population?!

I think his ego needs a second room all to himself ;)

And honestly, I was not impressed by the last season :S
It did not grab my attention and interest as it has in the past. Unfortunately, because I really wished that having lost Torchwood, I would still be a Whovian ... *sniff*

I hope the next season will blow me away.

Oh, I entirely agree, writers should learn to keep things polite and not have a go at fans, critics, or anybody at all! :)

I hope the next season will blow me away.

And I hope so too! :) I really enjoyed last series, but I can see why some people didn't, I just hope the next one is good for you as well! :)
