I don't really have personal experience, but I can answer on behalf of Frank's family. They were all born & raised in Buras, LA, which is where Katrina made landfall. The town is nonexistent now.

As for photos of areas still in ruins, look no further than the Lower Ninth Ward. I did a quick Flickr search, and there are some 2007 pics:
