i would suggest learning all you can to pass time. :3

My friend Drew is buddhist, but he lives in Northern Virginia...and is going to NYU...like...tomorrow...;_;

All you can do is learn as much as possible in the meantime. That way, when you *DO* find a monk, you're already "ready" or almost "ready" to take those vows!
