me too! i was older than a toddler, but small enough to fit down there. specifically, i remember riding around with a tootsie pop and pretending i was smoking, for some reason. i also remember the (now unbelievable) ash trays at the end of aisles!
Ha! This made me so nostalgic. Little did I know that the Alpha Beta of my youth was Store #1! (And the one closer to our house on Rinaldi but not on the way to anything [hence, our "beta" Alpha Beta, har har] is now a Whole Foods, which is a hilarious grocery journey, really.)
I wonder what Ralphs had that Alpha Beta didn't. Was it the tons of gimmicky promotions ca. 1978-1982 that was the secret to their longevity?
