back in business (for loki)

Sam hadn't been on any kind of vacation since the time Jess dragged him arond with her their last Christmas break together; he'd forgotten how much he liked travel for travel's sake. He and Loki had been all around London, with Sam showing his companion the appropriate Doctor Who episode for some of the landmarks. It had been a fun week, far more ( Read more... )

Loki hadn't really expected to enjoy himself. He hadn't really been sure what to expect, true, but he'd kept any expectations low and muffled, where they would not cause him trouble, as expectations were so frequently wont to do. But Sam was...pleasant company, the "tv show" he shared with Loki was silly and strangely engaging, and the city itself was unexpectedly beautiful, with its own strange sort of mortal charm. He found his thoughts straying less often into darkness, though he still slept poorly, still too often found himself thinking of Thor or Odin or Frigga or Asgard herself.

And this city was also...nearly pregnant with magic. It slept in stones and buildings and coiled in old places, pooled like collecting water, and he wondered that none seemed to see it.

At the moment, he was in the hotel, and rather morbidly reading an article about himself. And staring at most of it in appalled horror, though certain sections had him pressing his lips together in bitter, pained remembrance. He'd always been prone to poking at scabs.

Sam tossed the paper on the table when he got inside. "Food glorious food," he said, tossing a bag at Loki. "Whatcha reading about so early in the morning?" He looked at Loki's expression and tried to figure out what could be so horrifying. "Twilight? Harry Potter? Wait, are you reading about yourself right now?"

Loki glanced over at the food and then up at Sam, closing the window as soon as he managed to pull his mind from the distraction - though it would seem not quickly enough. He grimaced, slightly. "You will forgive me a touch of narcissism," he said, sounding cool and easy enough. "What sort of food is it tonight? And you know we could be eating better." Loki's been curious about some of the fancy restaurants they've passed by. They smell - and look - nice to him.

"We eat better when you pick," Sam pointed out. "I'm just going with what I'm used to; tonight it's fish and chips." He debated asking for a moment as he started eating, deciding to go for it. He was curious. "Did they get anything right in Norse mythology?"

He unfolded the paper almost out of habit, grabbing a pen and a journal he'd bought to make notes in.
