Okay, because I was asked by one person and became intrigued enough to start listing books for my own satisfaction, here is a list of fantasy/science fiction books that I have found with gay aspects. FYI, I will keep editing this with the new books I find and remember.

Here be gay heroes. For the most part. )

Oh, and just to let you know, the two I ordered were Fire's Stone and Luck in the Shadows. Thanks for the recs. I'm being somewhat indulgent with regard to them...

Ah, I was wondering which you'd decided on. I'm jealous of you - you know when you really love books, and wish you could go back to before you'd read them, so you'd have the pleasure of discovering them again? That would be me. ;-)

Yup... It's right there with the desperately-wanting-to-read-the-rest-but-not-wanting-to-get-closer-to-the-end feeling.

How depressingly well I know that feeling. I used to want to learn speed-reading, then realized that I was already finishing my books too fast as it was. It's sad when you get really involved in a book and characters, then abruptly blink and notice that there are no pages left to turn.

Just so you know - I will keep updating this list with the books that I find, and have already ETA a few.

Right, since seeing this I've read The Fire's Stone, which I found a bit simplistic, predictable and disappointing, and the Lynn Flewelling series which I adored. I just want more of them now, I want what happened next and she hasn't written it...

Thanks so much for the rec.

I can understand both reactions. I loved The Fire's Stone, but then I've long realized that I tend towards the simplistic and emotional in my reading.
(Could use the fact that I first read it in my mid-teens to explain it away, but frankly, I still love the characters, so it would be a cop-out.)

As for Lynn Flewelling - yeah. Beyond love for this series. I've had to buy new copies of the first two, as I'm wearing them out.

So yeah, almost six years after the fact... But, anywho, random person you don't know who came here from aleathiel's memories, and this was such an interesting list that I just had to comment. Some of them I've read, some I've avoided (I seem to be the only person in exsistence who doesn't like Lackey) - but: Talion: Revenant! There seriously should be slash written for that book, 's good to know someone else saw that!

Lastly, a rec that you might already have read - Dragon Bones and Dragon Blood by Patricia Briggs are v. awesome.

Heh - six years later, I've suddenly realized hey, wait a minute - I've read more than that, SURELY...

Thank you for your comment, you inspired me to update this a little. The additions were made off the top of my head, and there are a few non-fantasy books listed here; it's difficult to remain a purist!

Also - I still firmly ascribe to the belief that Michael Stackpole should have slashed Talion Revenant, and thank you for the recommendation - I haven't read that duology by Briggs yet, I need to look into it!

As for Lackey, I was one of those lucky ones who discovered her at Just The Right Age - i.e. 13. She has stayed on my bookshelves since then simply because she was my very first introduction to a gay hero. Seriously. Before then, my only point of reference for a gay character was Guy Gavriel Kay's Tommasso in Tigana, which I think we can all agree is Not The Most Positive.

Long comment is long. Sorry - but thanks again for reading and commenting!

'S the problem with lists, at least I can never seem to get all xx down for whatever list I'm writing.

Your additions to the list sound very, very interesting - though it's annoying with the out-of-print stuff. (Why do things go out of print? By now it feels like I've spent an eternity looking for Iron Dragon's Daughter by Swanwick and Winter Queen By Vinge...)

Yup, I agree and when I first read Talion I was a) pretty young and b)a slasher, yes, but a new one (thus the power of my slash googles was pretty weak ;)). About Briggs - I actually didn't think her urban fantasy stuff was all that special, so I was always very puzzled how she could write such gems as the Dragon duology, and then write the meh that is her Mercy Thompson and the utter crap that is everything else by her ( ... )
