Now I understand why there are idiots in college

Aug 05, 2009 16:52

Since I've been unable to find a job that doesn't involve french fries somehow, I've decided to go back to college. Today I took the placement test in English and a couple math fields (geometry, algebra, and college algebra). Considering it's been over 15 years since I left HS, I skimmed through an algebra book in prep. I didn't study it that ( Read more... )

I wish I could argue about this, but after getting a 47 I can only nod my head and go 'yeah, I am.'

What do you plan on majoring in?

Business. I want back into the computer field as a computer tech, but considering how many certs and shit I got I've already proved I don't need college to understand that type of stuff. Plus I'd be bored shitless in computer classes because either I already know it or I have no interest at all in some aspects of computers (fuck programming). However a basic business degree, that'll be at least somewhat relevant no matter what I end up doing.

I would say that the tests are to determine who's teachable, but then... well, that's a different test entirely. I doubt they go so far as to try and discern logical thinking, and scale it according to how long you've been out of contact with those problems.

Just proves how dumb the majority really is.

I've been thinking about to school for business too. I used to be pretty good at math, but I'd also forgotten what '!' mark meant. Good luck with school. Not that you'll need it, obviously. School's just paying for a degree, apparently.

Maybe that's it. Maybe they're so eager for money that they accept the very minimum that they can possibly accept, to keep the tuition coming in.

Yeah, mostly it's paying for a degree. But a degree will help getting a job I think. If nothing else, it's something to do until the economy picks up a bit and there are more/better jobs available. But yeah, I doubt I'll learn much in some of the classes. Maybe pick up some slightly better grammar in english class but probably not even that.

Yeah, exactly, it's almost a (reverse) Catch-22. A pointless degree will help with a job that requires no degree. If you can't afford education that teaches you nothing, you can't be paid for a job where you do nothing.

(5!) means they're excited and can't wait to see what your answer is.

If things don't work out after the courses you can make money this way.
