Character Information
Name: Yoshiya "Joshua" Kiryuu
Canon Origin/Series: The World Ends With You
School Year: 5th
Gender: male
Age: fifteen
Out of school living location: Liverpool, Merseyside, England
Blood status: Pureblood
Personality:
Being from a Pureblood family, it should be noted that first and foremost Joshua is a snotty little brat. He has an air of arrogance that makes you want to shoot him within moments of meeting him, and likes to twist your words around and toy with other people's feelings. He dislikes working hard, except if it's in his own interests, and would prefer having someone else do everything for him. He has a cynical attitude towards the world around him, mostly from what life has thrown at him thus far in his young life.
Joshua is by far not the most honest person ever. Yes, he does tell half-truths but he lies for the most part. He appears to be indifferent to others and will often act flippant towards them despite anything they might be going through at the time. He has little care for those around him but is oddly perceptive and aware of everyone else. Despite his snotty attitude, he's quite knowledgeable and extremely intelligent, confident in everything he does.
The most prominent part of Joshua's personality is that he's extremely manipulative, liking to play games with those he considers easy. However, he does take responsibility for his actions, but despite this doesn't care about what people think of him. Some of his selfish actions can seem quite questionable, since half the time he doesn't care about consequences. His casual relations with Muggleborns and Muggles in general sometimes irks the more pretentious of Purebloods, but Joshua genuinely seems fascinated about their way of life. He claims not to care about them, rather that he's simply observing how they handle integration into the wizarding world, but once someone does worm their way into his heart, though, Joshua will care...even if he doesn't say it out loud.
Canon Background:
If you're watching the screen closely during the first day of week one, Joshua is standing there next to Hachiko but disappears once Neku and Shiki become partners. This is your first introduction to him, if you're paying attention of course.
He becomes more involved in the Game in week two, where he becomes Neku's partner rather forcefully. Neku immediately decides he doesn't like him, and with good reason. It's revealed that Joshua can see dead people, and forced his way into the game after watching it in the RealGround after learning about the game from Sanae Hanekoma. Through the rest of the week, Joshua provides the player with tidbits of information and Neku with philosophical talks, even playing detective a bit. While this is going on, Neku gets flashes of hints that lead towards him accusing Joshua of killing him.
At the end of the second week, Neku and Joshua face Sho Minamimoto, that Game's Game Master, who has gone rogue and is using Taboo Noise to do his bidding. As a last resort, Minamimoto uses a Level i flare, and Joshua pushes Neku out of the way, telling him "By giving up on yourself, you give up on the world".
Joshua shows up again at the end of the third week, when Neku and Beat have made it past Kitaniji and a mind-controlled Shiki. After the last major battle of the game, he reveals what Neku always thought - that he was the one who killed Neku, but with a good reason. The Composer needed a proxy after all. He then proceeds to throw Neku a gun, telling him it'll be one last game and that he's already taken Neku's entry fee. Neku, however, refuses to shoot, having come to regard Joshua as a friend (even if he is a prissy asshole). This was apparently the answer Joshua was looking for, because the next time Neku wakes up in the Scramble, he's alive.
Joshua is next shown in full Composer form standing near Hanekoma as they watch the four reunite after a week. Hanekoma mentions that Joshua looks sad, almost lonely. As if in response, Joshua vanishes in a flash of light.
Background (AU!Canon; HP):
Dirty Joshua's story begins in Liverpool, Merseyside where he was born into a wealthy Pureblood family rather prematurely. Weak and sickly at a young age, Joshua spent a majority of his childhood life either indoors or in the hospital, depending on what season it was. Because of their line of work, his parents weren't around very often either, leaving him to be raised and home schooled by his uncle and Godfather, Sanae Hanekoma.
Due to his condition, Joshua spent much of his time as a child reading. Quite often he would stare out the window, especially if there were children nearby the house. His already cynical mind wondered how they could be so without a care in the world and not have to worry about being constantly sick like he did. By the time he became old enough to venture outside without his uncle, he wasn't interested in playing with the other children. Whenever he did play, however, it usually resulted in one of them going home in tears due to his horrid words. Lucky for him, his uncle turned a blind eye to this quite often.
As he grew older, the sickness that quite often plagued his body was quelled by a potion that he still has to take daily despite his health being better than it used to. Joshua chose to accept the invitation to attend Hogwarts rather than continue to be home schooled, despite his parent's protests - to him, they didn't have a say in his life anymore, having felt abandoned by his parents since they were away for most of his childhood.
Upon entering Hogwarts, Joshua was disappointed to find that his view of humans was true - to some extent. Most of the students surrounding him were rather naive, and he found that he grew tired of talking to them not long after arriving. There was one boy, however, that caught his attention. This boy set himself apart from everyone else, preferring to keep to himself rather than integrate into the student body. Joshua chose to invade that personal space bubble the other had set up around himself. The boy was different, a nice change from the norm making their way around Joshua, definitely more interesting than anyone Joshua had come across.
The Wizarding World in general disappointed him further with their attitude towards Muggles. While he himself found Muggleborns fascinating in their psyche and ways of handling their magic, the way most Purebloods interacted with them made Joshua really wonder if there could ever be such a thing as unity in the wizarding community. The boy previously mentioned, however, showed him differently by befriending not only three others of different bloods but Joshua himself. This both surprised and embarrassed the Pureblood, but needless to say changed his attitude about the wizarding community. A little bit anyway.Diana
How would your character fit in to each House?
Gryffindor:
Joshua would like to think he's chivalrous, though it could just be him being a brat. He does show courage in the game, like throwing himself in front of Neku at the end of week 2, but it could be that he did that because he didn't believe Minamimoto's attack would hurt him due to his Composer status.
Hufflepuff:
Joshua dislikes working hard and fair play, though he can be rather tolerant of others if they're following his orders. However, he lacks loyalty unless he truly cares about someone, and that in itself is rare.
Ravenclaw:
Joshua would fit well into this house. He's intelligent, sometimes extremely so, but is in no way creative other than his manipulation skills (this saddens his uncle greatly). He prefers books over people, however, due to his childhood. In canon, however, he is the Composer of Shibuya, something needed for a lot of Imagination, which is linked to creativity.
Slytherin:
Joshua would fit rather well here also. He's cunning and ambitious, not to mention manipulative and resourceful. He has leadership material, but would rather let someone else take care of the legwork and pull the strings behind the scenes. He loves spreading rumors and gossip, too. And of course, he's a Pureblood.
Sample Journal Entry:
It amazes me how stupidly naive first years are. They truly believe that the giant squid in the lake eats those who aren't careful and invade its depths. Squid primarily eat deep-sea fish and other squid species not in its own category. It's not like it's Cthulhu from Lovecraft's fine works, or the Kraken of Norse sagas and Scandinavian folklore.
Valentine's Day is coming up for all you lovebirds. I must admit I'm quite interested to know who confesses to who. Love is a fickle human emotion - personally I have never found myself falling for anyone, but beggars can't be choosers.
Sample Interaction Post in Third Person:
Joshua twirled a lock of hair around his finger, looking bored as he was being interrogated by some older Gryffindors. He didn't care to remember which year they were, or the reason why. Something about some rumor that had apparently made its way back to him through their information. Really, Joshua couldn't remember every rumor he spread now could he?
"Are you quite done?" he asked with a bit of a drawl to his voice, bringing his hand down and crossing his arms languidly over his chest. His calmness seemed to take them by surprise, like they were used to people being intimidated and falling into quivering messes. He rolled his eyes, sighing a bit dramatically as he turned to the one keeping him pinned down to the wall. On the inside, he was smiling. "I really do not understand how you put up with these louts. They obviously think they're better than you - you're just muscle to them. I've heard them talking about you behind your back, about how they're so lucky you're so dumb that you don't recognize it when they use you."
And that was it. The hands left the sides of Joshua's head as the bully turned on the other two, who were quick in their babble. While they were receiving some head trauma, Joshua slipped away and continued down the hall to where he had been going, whistling innocently the entire time as he heard the sounds of fighting behind him. "Seems as though they weren't really friends after all," he muttered to himself, a sly smile curling across his face as he slipped a hand into his trouser pocket. "I'll have to remember to thank whoever told me that information."
