Character Name: Thor Odinson/Thorlief Golmen
Canon source: Marvel, The Ultimates
Personality: When first introduced, Bruce Banner, Nick Fury, and most of the Ultimates believed Thor to be a paranoid schizophrenic because he boldly claimed to be the Norse god of Thunder. This was further cemented by Thor’s mental breakdown 3 weeks prior to his 30th birthday (after which he first started claiming to be Thor), seemingly attacking the Italian police at random, talking to himself at a restaurant, and the word of his “brother” Golmen. Though such claims were proven to be false, he may still exhibit symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia when interacting with the uninformed (or if Loki starts messing with him again). It doesn’t help that, unlike the 616 Asgardians, Thor acts and speaks like an average human being.
Those that don’t immediately find him crazy (and even to some that do), they will find Thor charismatic. He managed to raise a decent following of disciples back home by trying to spread his message on how to save the world by flashing a pretty smile and preaching his message. Others will find him a borderline eco-terrorist, extremely vocal about his views on abuses made by the US and other governments, big business, human rights, and the care of the planet. He can frequently be found participating in peaceful protests, performing aid work in third world countries or providing rain to drought-ridden areas, and the only times he would join the Ultimates was when serious threats arose, refusing to be on their pay roll. Odin tasked him with purifying Midgard, and Thor takes that mission very seriously.
The biggest difference between this Thor and other, more popular versions of this character is that he’s a pacifist. He’s more likely to go out and organize a protest or use his celebrity status to speak out on a talk show than go out and use force to get results. In fact, it’s pretty hard to get Thor riled up under normal circumstances, as evidenced by Cap barging into his nightclub (or the nightclub he was in) and accusing him of releasing Banner’s connection to the Hulk to the press. Not only did he take it all in stride, he quickly stopped those spitting on and hitting Cap on his behalf and apologized for their actions. That being said, he is capable of getting angry. After all, that giant, shiny axe-hammer Mjolnir would go to waste if he didn’t.
And when if you do manage to get him angry… well you’re just screwed.
History:
Here! How does your AU differ from canon? The Ultimate Universe (Earth 1610) is a canon AU to the normal Marvel-616. This version was meant to be a more realistic counterpart to 616, with a condensed timeline and altered back-stories (but then Jeph Loeb got his hands on it and fucked everything up). This version of Thor is, like the 616 version, a Norse God sent to Midgard, but unlike the 616 version, most people think he's just crazy. And unlike his 616 counterpart, he was born a mortal child into a mortal family (Donald Blake in 1610 is his Brother, Balder), retained the memories of past experiences, (though they took many years to come through), and was sent by Odin to save Midgard, rather than as punishment to learn humility. It's also important to note that this version of Thor doesn't speak with the "ye" and "thee," and is mostly a pacifist, getting himself involved in all kinds of non-violent protests and movements--he only swings around his hammer when he feels it's absolutely necessary. Thor's also a well-known self-help guru.
Strengths: Charismatic; possesses superhuman strength (able to life over an excess of 100 tons), reflexes, stamina, and endurance; resistant to injury (but not invulnerable); able to fly, teleport, and control the weather; has a kick-ass axe-hammer (Mjolnir) and a power boosting belt (Megingjardir).
Weaknesses: Technologically impaired (can barely open his e-mail), can’t manipulate the weather or teleport without Mjolnir, people tend to think he’s a paranoid schizophrenic when he talks about his life
Preferred drop-in point: New Mexico, please.
What are some of your plans for this character in their new environment? Meet up with the other Asgardians, hang out with the other Ultimates, stop any attempts of Loki trying to ruin his life some more, and try to find some protests/causes to get involved in.
