What's the series about? I'm happy with long fantasy novels, but I've had enough of depressing ones for a while...
Currently reading what is supposed to be Arthurian fantasy/romance/adventure but is closer to horror. I've just had a run of lousy books. Fingers crossed that the Philippa Gregory novel on my reading pile is worth the effort... (though I did read Richard Hammond's autobiography recently and that was excellent - read the whole thing in one weekend).
The series is about a young girl as she grows into life as a courtesan with as god given gift for being on the receiving end of S&M style pleasures. She is also trained to use her mind and memory, and it is more about that aspect of things. The third book is quite depressing in the first half, but the end is very rewarding. Also, she takes the Tolkien style of two stories in one book, with the interchange in the middle. It really is six stories. The first book is called Kushiel's Dart. I do recommend it alot. I can't really give you any more detail without ruining the surprise of the first 400 odd pages of book 1. Also, do not read the back cover.
