Things have gone wrong

I have a herniated disk putting pressure on a Lumbar nerve. It's a synovial sack between two of my lumbar spinal segments which has become irritated and is swelling to crush one of my nerves which if it ruptures could do all sorts of things like give me massive rushes of pain or simply paralyze me. I am calling to make an appointment with the ( Read more... )

*cuddles tightly* of course you can saunter in a wheel chair. We'll drape it with black damask and make it look all creepy. However, since I'd prefer not having you in a wheel chair (since if you're paralyzed, I have to be on top), we're going to do everything we can to keep that from happening. And if you need surgery, I will do my best to take the time off to come take care of you while you recover. Keep your head up, beloved. We can get through this.

Joe and I met when I had a severely herniated disc between my L4 L5, and another herniated disc above that one. Because of muscle spasms around my sacro illiac joint, I was bent pretty much at a 45 degree angle all the time, and I walked with a cane. When I finally got my surgery consult, my orthopedic surgeon blanched, and told me according to my MRI's 75% of my spinal cord was cut off, and I theoretically shouldn't be walking.

After 2 years of pain and 3 months of walking like a cripple, I had a partial discectomy- they left half the disc in to cushion the vertebrae, so they didn't have to fuse them. 2 hours after the surgery I was walking completely vertically, and pain free.

Yes, things go wrong. It's the story of human existence. We've just gotten a whole lot better at patching things up when they do.

If you ever need to talk to someone who's gone through this, feel free to give me a call or IM whenever. Your ladyfriend has all my info.
