[Compile] Renji, Misa, Rukia

Dec 13, 2006 13:24

Rukia's taunt he left alone. What was the point in teasing her further. His opinion on humans had changed considerably in the last few weeks, but there was no way he was going to admit to that. Besides Rukia most likely knew his feelings had changed anyway.

"Oh so that's what those are? I thought sensei was just joking around with us. It didn't make sense that there would be shinigami that killed humans." Crossing his arms in front of him, Renji pondered the implications. "It means Aizen has either one hell of an ally or one hell of an enemy. Shit." His fingers drummed along his biceps, eyebrows knotting at the bridge. "If Aizen tracks down this human he can either use him to create really evil hollows or kill him for thinning out the pool of souls to create the Ou-ken. Either way, this isn't good."

Misa walked along the street after buying herself an ice cream. It had been unusually hot today, and a strawberry ice cream was just the thing to keep her cool and refreshed, just as a famous cute girl should always look. After all, her manager always said, "You're not just a model in the photo shoots, you're a model everywhere you go." So Misa tried to always follow that rule and look as pretty as possible.

Misa walked along, eating her ice cream and thinking her little thoughts, when all of a sudden she noticed a very short girl walking in front of her. That wasn't so unusual. But then, a rather handsome guy jumped off a roof and started talking to the short girl. They appeared to be friends, but things got weirder again when she caught a snippet of their conversation. Death? Killing? I'm a shinigami? What on earth was going on?

Rukia would have gladly continued her taunting had she not gotten the feeling that she was being watched.

After throwing a discreet glance behind her, Rukia perceived that everything was normal, or at least as normal as she had come to expect from the human world. People still milled about the streets; one light-haired girl followed closely behind her and Renji, but she looked ordinary enough (though the clothes she wore certainly stood out from those her fellow street occupants had on; they looked much fancier than the inexpensive sundresses she’d bought) that Rukia wasn’t worried about her overhearing. Few people would think anything of a bizarre conversation between two strangers; after a few weeks of school in the same class as Keigo and his tangents, Rukia knew that this had to be true.

Still, she couldn’t help but be cautious. She turned back around to face Renji and quickened her pace slightly, hoping to put some distance between her and other passers-by (including the girl) while continuing her conversation with Renji (because even if the people she shared the street with were suspicious, it was more important to relate the details of her conversation to Renji so he could spread them to Hitsugaya, Matsumoto, and the other Shinigami that had accompanied him to the human realm).

“Exactly. For future reference the boy’s name is Light; his hair is sandy and he looks a little older than Ichigo. The Killer Shinigami following him is Ryuk; I’m… sure you’ll recognize him if you see him. Ryuk addressed Yoruichi directly, and Light didn’t seem to know who Aizen was. I don’t think they know anything about Soul Society’s conflict with Aizen, and if that’s the case, we’ve got to make sure, if we run into them again, that Aizen doesn’t find out about them at all.”

The thought made Renji laugh. "Aizen not find out? He seems to have eyes everywhere. It'll be tough to keep him from finding out about this Light kid and Ryuk."

He noticed he had lengthened his stride a bit to keep up with Rukia's pace. It had been done unconsciously. Too long accustomed to keeping his walk from over taxing the much smaller girl. It was beyond habit now and was second nature. Too many forward falls due to kicking the back of his knee when he walked to fast in front of her taught him to keep her in consideration.

When he finally noticed the were walking faster, he looked around until he noticed a girl trying to hard to not be noticed. Something about her made the hairs on the back of his neck prickle. Regardless though, until he knew for sure if she was following them he would take Rukia's lead and talk softly. "So what did you and this Light kid talk about?"

Wow. This conversation was really getting interesting. A Light who has a shinigami...Misa wondered what this Light person could look like. And a soul society? What on earth could that be? Trying hard not to be noticed, Misa followed the pair with even more intent and with her ears wider opened. This was like a mystery book! She wanted to see what happened in the end. After all, she had always been too Curious for her own good.

Thinking her Misa thoughts, such as what a good soap opera this could turn out to be, she didn't notice that she was less than a foot behind the really really short girl. Hmmmm...she might have to get ready to talk her way out of this one...

The girl Rukia had noticed before was gaining ground behind them. Her footsteps had grown closer to Rukia’s own, and it was more than a little disconcerting to the Shinigami.

“He found me out,” Rukia said in response to Renji as she turned her eyes down and to the side. After a moment of deliberation, she halted all motion and brought her gaze around. If last week’s encounter had taught her anything, it was to stay on her toes, to expect to be approached by people she should expect to feel wary toward. This girl inspired that disconcerting feeling. There was something about her that didn’t seem quite right, and Rukia couldn’t carry on her conversation with Renji until the unsettling feelings she had were resolved.

“Just as I will find out you.” She focused her eyes on the girl, who really did look innocent enough. Whether she was innocent, however, was a different matter. “Why is our conversation of any interest to you?”

Renji's next question was cut off when Rukia stopped to question their audience. Looking down at the taller girl, his brows rose. Rukia hadn't always been this paranoid. Just what had this Light person done or said to her to make her so jittery. Whatever it was, Renji didn't like it. He didn't like seeing his usually calm and unruffled friend up in arms and haranguing some innocent girl.

True the girl looked like a real bubble head and he had probably piqued her interest with his impressive arrival and even more spectacular ass. That was completely understandable. He couldn't help it if he attracted the dippy girls. There were plenty back home who flittered about him. In fact, Rikichi had to corral them for him every once in a while and shoo them away. Especially when he was training.

He shrugged and leaned forward whispering against Rukia's ear. "Oi. What's wrong with you? She's just a normal girl. Maybe she wants to ask me out on a date."

Misa had stopped when the short girl had turned around. She made her eyes really big and put a vacant expression on - good thing that models usually doubled as actresses! She'd have to thank her manager when she saw her again for demanding her to take those extra classes.

Back to the situation at hand. Misa tried to look as cute and harmless and innocent as possible and tilted her head to the side. "What do you mean, short-girl-san? I wasn't following you, or listening to your very interesting conversation about Ligh..." She stopped. And realized that she totally gave herself away. Okay, maybe she should have taken those academic classes, as well.

With the realization that she was utterly, completely, fully screwed, Misa looked up at the male companion of the girl and saw that he was, in fact, as nice-looking as his appearance had been. But that was not really the point here, now was it?

“You… dating should be the farthest thing from your mind at a time like this!” Rukia shot back her reply as silently as she could, narrowing her eyes at Renji and scrunching up her face to communicate that she was Hardly All That Pleased (it was a patented Kuchiki expression; the emphasis was therefore absolutely necessary). She hoped her countenance told him what she couldn’t say before this suspicious girl: that she was on edge and couldn’t afford to trust anyone right now. How could she, after meeting Light?

And speaking of him, had that girl just mentioned his name?

“So you were listening…” Concerned that the girl could be in cahoots with him (or worse: with Aizen), Rukia immediately pressed forward. “Do you know of him? And who are you yourself?”
