i'm under the impression this is an east coast thing. or at least i've never heard anyone use the term before i came to the east coast, and i swear i hear it at least once a day here and it bugs the hell out of me. and yes, i think it's used in a more general sense, like an adjective usually, but it originally was a racial slur, and it seems like whenever i ask people to explain what "guido" means, they inevitably say something along the lines of "you know. how italians dress and act."

i dunno maybe it's a pet peeve. of course it also took me quite a long time to get used to hearing the word "jap" all the time at brandeis without freaking out, haha.

I don't know how it is in the rest of the world, but in New Jersey, guidos are now also Asian, Mexican, OFTEN Indian, many other types of White Bread, and sometimes- though rarely- black.... So I suppose it's not really so much racist anymore, at least in terms of how it's used by the people I know =P Like how "retarded" is totally not offensive at all, as an adjective. (Just as a verb.)

And funnily enough, I know a kid whose last name actually is "Guido." Hehe.

haha i actually know someone whose first name is guido. bonus fun points to ask him, "hey guido, how'd your dago?"

and i know it's used mostly as an adjective to describe a certain sort of style here, but it seems like whenever i ask people to explain what "guido" means, they inevitably say something along the lines of "you know. how italians dress and act." one girl said that it was okay to say guido because "lots of guidos have embraced it and call themselves that!" i dunno it just doesn't sit right with me, but i guess maybe it's just a coastal thing.

Yeah. I feel you- that's a poor explanation and it definitely comes across as a racial slur because of it. It prob'ly is a coastal thing- to be fair, Jersey at least is OVERRUN with guidos.. I mean, have you been to the shore? A better definition of it is probably,

"Arrogant douchebags who think too highly of themselves and spend too much time making themselves look and smell as douchey as possible, while doing their best to degrade women and non-guidos as much as humanly possible."

Or in essence, guidos are the new jocks.

ooh, I was just talking about the whole guido thing the other day! this guy i dated for a while used to say it and I was kind of like, hmm, that sounds sort of racist. But then it got so widespread I was like, well, maybe I misunderstood. Still, I almost never said it because it seemed kind of iffy. Then my brother and I started talking about it and I ran past some friends and we were all like, uncertain about it. Although it was funny, I was explaining what it means and I was like, "Guys who wax their chests and tan too much and have too much hair gel and too tight shirts that are unbuttoned..." and my friend, who is italian, goes, "Well, I don't know if it's a racial thing, but that describes most of the men in my family."

Anyway, you're probably right about it being racist. It's a certain TYPE of italian but it's still one of those things that you probably don't want to say out loud, right.
