Tropical Storm Katrina is strengthening in the Bahamas and looking like it might develop into a hurricane by the time it hits the Florida coast, sometime in the early hours of Friday morning.
That was fast! I commend our collegues at the National Hurricane Center for staying on top of this storm.
The projected storm path puts Katrina making landfall over Broward County / Fort Lauderdale. This means the strongest part (the Northwest quadrant) would slam into Northern Broward/Southern Palm Beach county, affecting areas such as Pompano Beach, Deerfield Beach, Boca Raton, and Delray Beach. However, Katrina only has a 10% of becoming a category 2 storm- this is good news for this area, especially since some areas are still cleaning up from Frances and Jeanne last year.
Katrina then looks as though she will tear across Florida before regrouping and regaining strength in the gulf. It looks as though she will then slam into the Alabama/Georgia coast & Florida panhandle sometime mid-next week. What she will land again as is anyone's guess but I don't see her strengthening above a category 2 at the very most.
Is there another potential depression in the carribean? It looks as though there is a wave organizing and gaining strength just east of the Lesser Antilles. This could become TD 13 and later, TS/H Lee.
Needless to say, I am making this update because 12 has her hands full at the moment.
